Women's Soccer Defeats Plymouth State, 3-0, on the Road

Thompson scores first career goal against the Panthers

PLYMOUTH, N.H. – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth women's soccer team defeated Plymouth State University on the road, 3-0, during a Little East Conference (LEC) tilt on Saturday afternoon. The Corsairs move to a 2-3-1 league record and are now 6-6-3 overall with the victory over the Panthers who fell to a 0-5 Little East mark.

The Corsairs came out strong to open the road game with first year Jordan Costa firing the first shot on target of the contest to force a save by Panthers goalkeeper Sydney Rowe. UMass Dartmouth snagged an early 1-0 lead in the game thanks to a score by first year Natalie Frazier at the 13:32 mark. The Corsairs continued to apply pressure on the Panthers defense as first year Rieanna Murray produced the next three shots including one frame that Rowe stopped.

UMass Dartmouth held on to their one-goal advantage heading into the second half and quickly doubled their lead thanks to a score by Murray in the 50th minute. Senior Ashlyn Aguiar drove into Plymouth State box and sent in a cross that was intercepted by a Panther defender. Murray was fast to steal the ball away and tap the ball into the back of the net to make it a 2-0 game. The Panthers responded as Piper Sullivan rifled a shot on target that first year goalkeeper Marina Cassano saved for her first of the afternoon.

Approaching the final 15 minutes of the game, Frazier registered a pair of strikes on frame, both of which Rowe were able to stop. In the 87th minute, first year Isla Thompson cemented the Corsairs road win by scoring her first collegiate goal. Sophomore Anna Keller dished a centering pass to the feet of Thompson who cut the ball onto her right foot and blasted a strike into the bottom left corner to seal a 3-0 victory against Plymouth State.

The Corsairs outshot the Panthers 14-5 in the contest and held a 7-2 advantage in shots on-goal. UMass Dartmouth edged the home team with seven total corner kicks compared to their six corners in the game.

Frazier notched her 11th goal of the season, tying for first overall in the Little East, after posting all three shots on target. Murray scored her third goal of the year for two points after leading the squad with four shots while Thompson netted her first collegiate goal in the road win over Plymouth State.

Cassano secured her second career shutout win for the Corsairs with two saves on the afternoon. Her counterpart finished the game with four stops and three goals allowed in net for Plymouth State.

UMass Dartmouth travels to Rhode Island College for their next Little East Conference matchup on Wednesday, October 22 slated for a 4:00 p.m. kickoff.
