DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Powered by a career-high 31-point effort from senior guard
Nic Boyd, UMass Dartmouth men's basketball defeat Babson College by a final score of 79-62 from the Tripp Athletic Center. The Corsairs improved to a 4-1 overall record with the non-conference win against the Beavers and secure their third straight home victory of the season.
First year guard
Danny Reyes put the Corsairs on the scoreboard with a basket from distance after a quiet start to the contest. UMass Dartmouth continued to extend their lead to 10-0 thanks to seven straight points from Boyd. Shortly after, senior guard
Darius Peterson and Boyd each posted a triple for the Corsairs to make it a 19-10 game. Babson fought back with a 9-0 run to tie the score up at 19-all crossing the midway point of the first half. Reyes responded by dropping five points for UMass Dartmouth followed by a good layup from senior center
Cam Dunbury to regain a 28-12 edge.
Both teams continued to exchange points in the final minutes of the opening half with first year guard
Mahdee McNair laying in his first bucket of the night at the 7:59 mark. After Timmy Mulvey cut the Corsairs lead down to two-points with his jumps shot, Reyes finished a tough basket before Boyd knocked down his third three-point shot to take back a 39-32 advantage. Boyd posted four late points for UMass Dartmouth to close out the first half with a 43-40 lead over the Beavers.
Dunbury kicked off the second half strong for the Corsairs after finishing a tip-in basket in the opening minutes of action. Babson took a 50-49 edge over UMass Dartmouth after going 4-for-4 from the charity stripe along with a go-ahead basket from Timmy O'Toole with 14:10 on the clock. Not long after, the Corsairs found a burst of energy following a good jumper from first year guard
Strada Joseph to kickstart a 13-0 run. Boyd drained a pair of triples in the run to give UMass Dartmouth a 62-50 lead with under eight minutes left in the game.
Boyd clipped in his third basket from behind the arc before going 3-for-3 at the free throw line to extend the home team's advantage to 16-points. First year guard
Isaiah Makor made an immediate impact after checking into the game by producing a steal and feeding the ball to Joseph who finished the layup for a pair of fast break points. UMass Dartmouth sealed their third consecutive home win after adding four points from the charity stripe to defeat Babson by a final score of 79-62.
Boyd recorded a career-high 31 points in the victory after going 11-for-18 from the field including a season-high six made three-pointers (6-9). He also recorded five rebounds, one assist and a steal for the Corsairs. Reyes also dropped double-digits with 21 points (7-13 FG, 2-5 3FG, 2-3 FT) along with five boards, three assists, and a steal. Dunbury led the squad with a game-high nine rebounds while also tallying eight points (3-6 FG, 2-4 FT), two steals, and a block. Joseph matched his season-high four assists against the Beavers and added eight points (2-3 FG, 4-6 FT) and a pair of steals.
UMass Dartmouth travels to Bates College for their next non-league contest on Sunday, November 23, slated for a 1:00 p.m. tipoff.
