Men's Hockey Shoulder Tough Loss to Anna Maria

Walker scores two goals with an assist in 5-3 defeat to AMCats

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. – Powered by a four-goal effort in the third period, Anna Maria College defeated UMass Dartmouth in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action on Thursday at Hetland Arena. The AMCats improve to 16-5-0 overall with the 5-3 victory and are now 12-2-0 in conference play. The Corsairs are now 9-12-1 with a 6-8-1 mark in the MASCAC.

The Corsairs owned a 3-0 lead just 50 second into the second period as the second goal of the night from sophomore winger Alex Walker put the Corsairs ahead. Anna Maria battled back as graduate student defender Samson Mouland connected off a feed from junior center Brandon Della Paolera to close the gap to two at 6:14.

That scored held until the final period of play as the AMCats scored four unanswered. Sophomore winger Max Wennerberg got things going at 5:36, banking home a pass from graduate center Matt Gilbert. Less than a minute later, Anna Maria netted the equalizer on a shot from senior Derek Raposo that ricocheted off a Corsairs defender in front.

Rookie winger Dylan McElhinny scored the go-ahead at 14:12, tipping home a Gilbert shot for the 4-3 advantage. The AMCats added a fifth goal from sophomore center Nicholas Frederick with two minutes remaining to close out the scoring.

The Corsairs worked to pull their goalie in favor of the extra attacker but were unable to connect and get another past junior netminder Cole Johnston.

UMass Dartmouth opened the game's scoring a 8:06 of the first on the power play as Walker banged home a rebound of a shot from fifth year center Michael Mania on the left side. The Corsairs then made it a 2-0 lead as sophomore center Nolan Wutzke tipped home a loose puck into the empty left side after a shot from junior winger Tyler Stewart was turned aside by Johnston.

Johnston finished with 17 saves for the AMCats to earn the victory, while junior goalie Marshall McKallip made 44 saves on the night for UMD, including 22 in the first period of play.

The Corsairs return to action on Saturday with the final regular season home game of 2024-25. UMD welcomes MCLA for a 7:30pm puck-drop at Hetland Arena as they honor their graduating class in a pre-game ceremony.
