Reyes Powers Corsairs to 108-73 Win Over VTSU Castleton

Reyes records first career triple-double in conference victory

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – First year guard Danny Reyes recorded his first career triple-double to power the UMass Dartmouth men's basketball team to a dominant 108-73 win over the Vermont State University Castleton on Saturday afternoon from the Tripp Athletic Center. The Corsairs improved to a 5-7 Little East Conference (LEC) record while the Spartans dropped to 2-10 in conference play.

After the Spartans took an early 6-5 edge in the opening two minutes of action, the Corsairs went on a 20-0 run to claim a commanding 25-6 lead. UMass Dartmouth clipped in four consecutive three-pointers in the run with graduate student Isaac Percy and first year Camden DiChiara each recording two triples apiece. At the 10:48 mark, junior Cam Dunbury dunked off the assist from graduate student Jayquan Leonard to kickstart a 14-1 run finished off by a triple from Reyes to give the Corsairs a 39-16 advantage.

Sophomore Trent Santos drained back-to-back three-pointers approaching the last five minutes of the opening half. Both teams exchanged late buckets in the remaining two minutes of play, but DiChiara banked in a pair of triples to put UMass Dartmouth up by a dominate 32-point s at the end of the first.

After the Spartans started the second half by hitting two three-pointers, DiChiara answered with two triples of his own for the Corsairs. DiChiara continued to build UMass Dartmouth's lead tacking on five more points followed by another three-pointer from Santos to make it an 83-46 game with 13:26 on the clock. The Spartans responded by stringing the nest six straight points together to make the score 83-52.

Junior Josh Lopes posted seven points for the Corsairs to extend their advantage to 33 points. With 4:36 on the clock, Reyes knocked down a triple off the helper from Santos to put the home team up 100-65. Not too long after junior Darius Peterson checked into the game, he nailed a three-pointer that cemented the Corsairs 108-73 win over VTSU Castleton.

Reyes recorded his first collegiate triple-double in the win after scoring 14 points (4-7 FG, 2-4 3-FG, 4-4 FT) with 11 assists and 10 rebounds. The last player to record a triple-double (16-10-10) for the Corsairs was by Marcus Azor against Keene State on Feb. 26, 2022.
