Women's Lacrosse Falls to Montclair State, 16-9

SAN JUAN, P.R. – The UMass Dartmouth women's lacrosse team came up short against Montclair State University, 16-9, during the first game of the Puerto Rico Clasico tournament on Monday morning. The Corsairs dropped to 3-2 on the season with the loss versus the Red Hawks who also moved to a 3-2 overall record.
 
Sophomore Maddy Allen and graduate student Kyra Lyons gave UMass Dartmouth an early 2-0 advantage with their scores in the opening period. After Allen found the back of the net for the second time at the 8:32 mark to make it a 3-1 game, the Red Hawks tallied back-to-back goals in the last five minutes of play to tie the score up at 3-apiece.
 
Lyons answered for the Corsairs by notching two goals, both assisted by sophomore Jennifer Lins, in the first four minutes of the second period to go ahead 5-3. First year Jenny Lipaonvich registered her first score of the day at the 8:29 mark to maintain a two-goal lead for UMass Dartmouth. Amra Lukovic posted a late goal for the Red Hawks to cut the Corsairs advantage down to just one goal heading into halftime.
 
Shortly after Allen buried the ball into the net for her hat trick, Montclair State bounced back, netting two quick scores to even the game up at 7-7 in the third period. Allen went on to post two more goals in the period, but the Red Hawks battled back taking an 11-9 lead entering the final period of the contest. Montclair State continued to pull away in the fourth period, scoring five unanswered goals to cement their 16-9 win over UMass Dartmouth.
 
Allen led the squad with her five-goal effort for five points to go along with a team-high four draw controls. Lyons ended the game with her second hat trick of the season registering 5-of-7 shots on frame and going 1-for-3 from the free position spot. Lipanovich netted one goal along with one assist for two points to go along with a team-high three ground balls and two caused turnovers. Lins finished the game with three assists for three points to match her career-high in assists.
 
First year goalie Keira Bushey, making her fifth start of the season, picked up the loss after making 13 saves and allowing 16 goals. Her counterpart wrapped up the game with five total saves and allowed nine goals on the day.
 
UMass Dartmouth concludes the Puerto Rico Clasico on Tuesday, Mar. 11 playing Piedmont University at 12:00 p.m. from San Juan, P.R.
