BAYAMON, P.R. – The UMass Dartmouth women's lacrosse team was edged by Piedmont University in the final day of the Puerto Rico Clasico on Tuesday by a final score of 14-12. The Corsairs are now 3-3 on the season while the Lions improved to a 5-4 overall record with the win.
Piedmont jumped out to an early 3-1 lead in the game as three different Lions found the back of the net while first year
Jenny Lipanovich tallied the first goal for UMass Dartmouth. After sophomore
Maddy Allen netted her first score of the afternoon to make it 3-2, graduate student
Kyra Lyons tied the game up at 3-apeice with her 10
th goal of the season at the 8:23 mark. The Lions answered by scoring three consecutive goals to double their advantage with under five minutes left in the first period.
First year
Kyra DiBiase notched her third goal of the season off the assist from sophomore
Jennifer Lins at the 2:01 mark, but Piedmont took a 7-4 lead heading into the second thanks to a late score by Amanda Barret. Lipanovich got the Corsair offense going in the second netting back-to-back goals to make it a one-goal game. The Lions responded in the final seven minutes of the half by notching two goals to take a 9-6 advantage at the break.
In the third period, sophomore
Lily Nees registered 2-of-3 goals in a 3-0 run for UMass Dartmouth to once again tie the game at 9-apeice. Savannah Limehouse posted a free position goal shortly after and went on to assist the Lions 11
th score of the day to make it 11-9 entering the fourth period. Piedmont wasted no time in the final period of the contest as Laura Crone scored a man-advantage goal at the 14:42 mark. After the Lions produced two more goals on the man-advantage to take a 14-9 lead, Allen tallied her second of the day to cut Piedmont's lead down to four-goals. Claire Altshuler buried a pair of late goals for the Corsairs, but the Lions secured went on to secure the win by a final score of 14-12.
Lipanovich lead the team with her hat trick for three points on the afternoon to go along with two draw controls and one ground ball. Nees ended the day with a team-high nine draw controls as well as two scores for two points. Allen and Altshuler each recorded a pair of goals for the Corsairs while DiBiase, Lyons, and first year
Adella Mabee posted one goal apiece. Altshuler's two goals marks a new career-high for the rookie while also tallying a career-high four ground balls against the Lions.
First year goalie Keria Bushey picked up her third loss in net for UMass Dartmouth after producing seven total stops and allowing 14 goals. Her counterpart ended the game with 12 total saves and allowed 12 goals on the afternoon.
UMass Dartmouth returns to Cressy Field for their next non-conference showdown against Curry College on Wednesday, Mar. 19. The game is scheduled for at 7:00 p.m. start time.
