DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Powered by a career-high seven goal performance from first year
Jenny Lipanovich, the UMass Dartmouth women's lacrosse team defeated Curry College, 16-12, during non-conference action on Wednesday night. The Corsairs improved to a 4-3 overall record with the victory over the Colonels who dropped to 1-6 on the season.
Sophomore
Maddy Allen opened the scoring with her goal in the first minute of play to put the Corsairs up 1-0 early in the game. After Nicole Michael tied the game on the man-advantage, Allen and Lipanovich answered by notching a goal apiece to snag a 3-1 lead with under seven minutes to go in the first period. Allen kept the Corsairs ahead 4-2 after securing her hat trick in the game at the 4:36 mark to take a two-goal edge at the end of the opening period.
UMass Dartmouth continued their offensive onslaught in the second period, scoring three unanswered goals in the opening six minutes of action. Graduate student
Kyra Lyons tallied her first goal of the night followed scores from both Lipanovich and Allen to make it a 7-2 game. Curry responded by notching two quick goals to cut UMass Dartmouth's lead down to three goals. Lyons and Allen each recorded free position goals in the final minutes of the first half, but the Colonels posted a pair of late scores to make it a 9-6 game at the break.
It was a quiet third period as both teams managed to score two goals apiece. Allen netted an early goal at the 10:31 mark of the period before Lipanovich found the back of the net with just eight seconds remaining to keep the Corsairs up 11-8. Claire Altshuler also netted her seventh goal of the season to help UMass Dartmouth defeat Curry by a final score of 16-12.
Lipanovich posted a career-high seven goals against the Colonels along with one assist for eight points. She also ended the game with seven ground balls and three caused turnovers. Allen finished the game with six goals for six points along with five ground balls and four caused turnovers. Lyons produced a pair of goals and an assist for three points while Altshuler netted her seventh score of the year.
First year goalie Keria Bushey picked up her fourth victory in net for UMass Dartmouth after registering seven saves and allowing 12 goals after playing the entire game. Her counterpart produced 13 stops and allowed 16 goals in net.
The Corsairs will host Vermont State University Castleton on Saturday, Mar. 22 for their opening Little East Conference match of the season. The contest is scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m. from Cressy Field.
