Softball Edges Catholic on Final Day of THE Spring Games

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The UMass Dartmouth softball team picked up their seventh win of the season after edging Catholic University, 3-2, on the final day of THE Spring Games on Thursday afternoon. The Corsairs improved to a 7-2 mark on the year while the Cardinals dropped to 9-3 overall with the loss.
 
Catholic took the lead in the top of the second inning thanks to McHugh who drilled the ball over the left field fence to make it a 1-0 game. The Corsairs quickly responded in the bottom of the second after sophomore Lily Routhier reached home on a wild pitch to tie the score up at 1-apiece. UMass Dartmouth took their first lead of the day in the next inning scoring two runs off one hit to pull away with a 3-1 advantage.
 
With runners on second and third base, junior catcher Lena Tsonis notched an RBI single to tag senior Larissa Piessens home and give the Corsairs a 2-1 edge. Shortly after, junior Raelynn Perregaux scored on a fielding error by the Cardinals short stop to go ahead 3-1. For the next three innings, first year pitcher Edy Crawford held the Cardinals to just one hit along with one strikeout. Catholic was able to add one late run in the top of the seventh, but the Corsairs held on to defeat the Cardinals by a final score of 3-2.
 
Tsonis recorded the lone RBI for UMass Dartmouth in the game after going 1-for-3 at the plate along with one stolen base. Perregaux and Routhier each tallied one hit and one run against the Cardinals while senior outfielder Kinu Takasugi also registered one hit on three at-bats.
 
Crawford secured her fourth win in the circle for UMass Dartmouth after throwing all seven innings. She allowed just two earned runs on five hits while striking out one batter on 100 pitches.
 
UMass Dartmouth returns to the diamond on Tuesday, Mar. 18 playing at Bridgewater State University for their next non-conference doubleheader. Game one is slated to begin at 3:00 p.m. followed by a 5:00 p.m. game two state time.
