Perregaux Blasts Two Home Runs, Softball Splits with Brandeis University

WALTHAM, Mass. – Junior infielder RaeLynn Perregaux blasted a career-high two home runs during the opening game against Brandeis University to help the UMass Dartmouth softball team split their double header with the Judges in non-conference action on Tuesday. The Corsairs improved to an 11-5 overall record on the season while the Judges moved to 2-15.
 
Junior catcher Lena Tsonis gave the Corsairs an early 3-0 lead in the opening game after recording her third home run of the season. In the top of the third, Perregaux put UMass Dartmouth ahead 4-0 thanks to her solo home run, marking her first of the season. The Judges battled back in the bottom of the third inning, scoring three runs off three hits to make it a 4-3 game.
 
UMass Dartmouth responded in the following inning, adding six runs to the scoreboard off four hits to take a 10-3 advantage. Sophomore outfielder Liv Matos got the bats going with her RBI double to score junior outfielder Sydney Menz home. Senior short stop Larissa Piessens doubled for two RBI before Perreguax drilled the ball over the center field fence for her second homer of the day to put the Corsairs up 10-3. UMass Dartmouth sealed the win in the top of the sixth by cashing in two more runs featuring sophomore infielder Chaylin Cruz Salgado tagging home on a pass ball followed by an RBI double from Perregaux to defeat Brandeis 12-4 in game one.
 
Perregaux went 4-for-4 at the plate with five RBI, three runs, two home runs, and two doubles. Her pair of homers marks a career-high for the junior third baseman bringing her career total to six. Tsonis recorded her third home run of the season after going 1-for-3 with three RBI and one run while Piessens went 2-for-4 with three runs, two RBI, a double, and one stolen base. Matos also posted one RBI in the win after going 1-for-2 at the plate while Cruz Salgado lead the team with her pair of stolen bases.
 
First year pitcher Riley Giard secured her first collegiate win on the mound after throwing the last 3.1 innings. She allowed one earned run on hit while punching out two batters off 49 total pitches. Sophomore pitcher Lily Routhier pitched the opening 2.2 innings giving up three earned runs off five hits after throwing 55 total pitches.  
 
In game two, Piessens gave UMass Dartmouth an early 1-0 edge in the top of the first inning after hitting her first home run of the season. The Judges quickly answered in the bottom of the first by grabbing a 3-1 lead after registering three hits. After Brandeis tacked on another run in the bottom of the third, Tsonis tripled to center field to score Cruz Salgado home to cut the Judges advantage in half. Brandeis secured the game two victory after scoring five runs in the bottom of the sixth to win by a final score of 10-2.
 
Piessens ended the game by going 2-for-3 at the plate with one RBI, one run, a home run, and a double. Tsonis posted the lone triple of the game after going 1-for-2 with one RBI. Menz also finished the game going 1-for-2 along with one stolen base.
 
Routhier picked up the loss after throwing 5.0 innings for the Corsairs allowing three earned runs off eight hits. First year pitcher Edy Crawford checked into the game briefly facing five batters and allowing five earned runs on three hits. Giard closed the game facing two batters and giving up just one hit.
 
UMass Dartmouth opens Little East Conference play on Saturday, Mar. 29 at UMass Boston for a double header series. The first game is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. followed by a 3:00 p.m. game two start time.
