Box Score AUBURNDALE, Mass. – Powered by an outstanding effort on the mound and hits from six different players, the UMass Dartmouth baseball team defeated Roger Williams University, 5-2 on Sunday at Lake Myrtle Park. The Corsairs earn their first win of the season, moving to 1-4 overall.
In the battle of regional rivals, the Corsairs opened up the game's scoring first with a 2-0 lead in the top of the third. Junior center fielder
Brett Baker got it started, getting hit by a pitch to head to first.

Joe Muzio was up next, drawing a walk to put runners on first and second. The Hawks got
Chance Checca to strike out, putting two outs on the board, but graduate catcher
Matt Tempone stepped up to the plate with a single to right to bring home Baker.
On the next at-bat, senior third baseman
Jake San Antonio drove a single to left field, bringing home Muzio for the 2-0 advantage.
Fast forward to the top of the sixth as the Corsairs got things going once again. Another hit-by-pitch – this time to San Antonio – saw Checca step up to the plate. He sent a line drive to left field, bringing home the runner for a 3-0 lead with no outs on the board.
Roger Williams went to the bullpen, bringing on sophomore right-hander Dylan Brenner, who received a tough welcome as sophomore shortstop
Cooper Wixon singled on a grounder to right field. With two on and no outs on the board, the Corsairs made it bases loaded as senior right fielder
Scott Cromack walked to bring in another new pitcher for the Hawks.
With junior righty Ryan Camp on the hill, the Corsairs saw Baker send a sacrifice fly to left, bringing home Checca for the 4-0 lead. Runners on the corners and two outs on the board, UMass Dartmouth saw Muzio hit it into play, reaching on an error to bring another run across before the Hawks finally closed out the top half of the inning.
Roger Williams got on the board in the bottom of the sixth as a lead off triple by graduate second baseman Nick Sheehan set up a one-out single by senior left fielder Sam Weigel as he singled to short to score the run. A lining single to center from senior Dennis Folan set up runners on first and second, but Corsairs junior hurler
Ray Boutiette got senior Will Florio to strikeout looking to shut down the threat.
The Corsairs put together another solid attempt in the top of the eighth, getting two runners on before the Hawks ending the inning with a caught stealing attempt at third by UMD. In the bottom of the frame, the Hawks got one back as Weigel's fly ball to left crept over the wall for a home run, but the Corsairs held strong.
Boutiette was phenomenal for the Corsairs, going 8.0 innings with just two runs allowed on six hits, striking out eight batters before giving way to junior lefty
Seamus Marshall in the ninth. Marshall allowed no runs or hits, surrendering just one walk to end the game for UMass Dartmouth's first win of the 2025 campaign.
For the game, Baker, Tempone, San Antonio and Checca also drove in RBIs, while Wixon went 2-for-4 on the day. Baker, San Antonio and Checca also each had a run scored for the Corsairs.
UMass Dartmouth returns to action on Monday, heading to Chain O'Lakes Park in Winter Haven for a 3:45pm showdown against the Gators of Russell Sage College.
