WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – A two-run homer by sophomore catcher
Lena Tsonis helps lift the UMass Dartmouth softball team over Eastern Connecticut State University, 6-5, in game two to split the Little East Conference series and move to 2-8 in league action. The Corsairs shouldered a 9-1 loss in game one of the road double header and are now 14-14 overall on the season.
The Corsairs got on the scoreboard quickly in the opening inning of game two as junior
Olivia Silva batted a run in after notching a double to left field. Shortly after, Tsonis blasted the ball for a two-run home run to give UMass Dartmouth an early 3-0 lead in the contest. The Warriors responded swiftly, scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the first before knotting the score up at 3-apeice thanks to an RBI single from Maddi Sauve in the second inning.
Junior third baseman
RaeLynn Perregaux put the Corsairs back on top, 5-3, with a single through the 5-6 hole to score both junior second baseman Emma Taley and senior shortstop
Larissa Piessens. After Kaley Laird homered in the bottom of the fourth, junior outfielder
Sydney Menz sealed UMass Dartmouth's 6-5 victory with an RBI single in the fifth to tag sophomore
Lily Routhier home.
Tsonis recorded her fourth home run of the season after going 1-for-3 with two RBI and one run. Perregaux also recorded two runs batted and one run after leading the team with her two hits on three at-bats. Silva went 1-for-4 at the plate with one RBI, one run, and two doubles while Menz tallied one RBI on a 1-for-3 performance.
First year pitcher
Edy Crawford threw a complete game to earn her sixth win on the mound for UMass Dartmouth. She allowed five earned runs and 11 hits after throwing 117 pitches on 31 batters faced.
In the opening game of the day, Eastern Connecticut State jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first three innings. Sophomore outfielder
Olivia Ali cut the Warriors lead in half after picking up an RBI double in the top of the fourth inning. The home team kept control for the remainder of the game cashing in seven runs combined in the fourth and sixth inning to cement a 9-1 win over the Corsairs in game one.
Ali posted the lone RBI for UMass Dartmouth after going 1-for-2 at the plate with one double. Perregaux went 2-for-3 with a double in game one while Silva also recorded a double after a 1-for-2 performance with one run.
Crawford picked up the loss after pitching the opening four innings and allowing two earned runs and eights hits. She tallied one strikeout after facing 20 batters and throwing 89 total pitches. First year pitcher
Riley Giard checked into the game throwing for 1.2 innings and gave up four earned runs and three hits while registering one punchout. Sophomore pitcher
Arienna Boss finished the game facing two batters and allowed one hit and a walk.
UMass Dartmouth hosts Rhode Island College for their next Little East series on Tuesday, April 22 with first pitch starting at 3:00 p.m. from UMD Softball Field.
