Women's Lacrosse Comes Up Short Against Western Connecticut State, 14-13

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The UMass Dartmouth women's lacrosse team came up short against Western Connecticut State University, 14-13, during their final home regular season contest of the season from Cressy Field. The Corsairs are now 3-3 in Little East Conference play after shouldering a close loss to the Wolves who move to 5-1 in league action.
 
First year attacker Claire Altshuler netted the opening goal of the game to give UMass Dartmouth a quick 1-0 edge over the Wolves. After Savannah Kom tied the score up at 1-1, first year attacker Adella Mabee and Altshuler answered by notching a goal apiece to regain a 3-2 lead. Sophomore attacker Maddy Allen tallied three straight scores for the Corsairs, marking her 12th game with three-or-more goals, to maintain a 6-4 advantage after the first period.
 
It was a quiet second quarter on the attacking side for both teams with Mabee recording the lone goal for UMass Dartmouth at the 11:01 mark. Isabella Pota posted a late score in the quarter to make it a 7-5 game heading into halftime.
 
First year attacker Jenny Lipanovich registered her first goal of the afternoon to start the third period soon followed by another score by Allen to put the Corsairs ahead 9-5. Shortly after, the Wolves offense found their rhythm going on a 6-1 run to claim their first lead of the game at 11-10. Madison Ratchford gave the Wolves a twp-goal edge after scoring on the man-advantage in the opening minute of the fourth period. Graduate student midfielder Kyra Lyons found the back of the net for the 22nd time this season to make it a one-goal lead again for the visitors. Despite tacking on two more goals in the final quarter, Western Connecticut State secured their comeback win by a final score of 14-13.
 
Allen led the team with four goals for four points, bringing her to a career-high 61 total goals on the season, while also recording a game-high nine draw controls. Mabee recorded her first collegiate hat trick after posting three goals for three points on the afternoon. Lipanovoch also ended the game with three goals as well as one assist for four points and caused a career-high six turnovers against the Wolves. Altshuler tallied a pair of goals and dished out three assists for a career-high five points while Lyons finished the contest with one goal and one assist.
 
First year goalie Keria Bushey earned the loss in net for UMass Dartmouth after producing 10 saves and allowing 14 goals. Her counterpart registered five stops and allowed 13 goals in net for Western Connecticut State.
 
UMass Dartmouth travels to Eastern Connecticut State University on Wednesday, April 23 for their next league tilt starting at 5:00 p.m. from Rick McCarthy Field.
