Baseball Powers Past UMass Boston, 6-1

Corsairs capitalize on five-run sixth inning enroute to victory

BOSTON, Mass. – Powered by a five-run sixth inning, the UMass Dartmouth baseball team defeated UMass Boston, 6-1 in Little East Conference action on Tuesday. The game, which was called after seven innings due to fog, saw the Corsairs improve to 15-13 overall and 7-4 in conference play. The Beacons are now 21-11 and 9-4 in the Little East.

UMass Boston opened the game's scoring in the bottom of the first and the score remained the same until the sixth when the visitors broke open the game. The Corsairs got things going as sophomore right fielder Marcus Ollivierre stole second base, advancing to home on two separate errors for the 1-0 lead.

Graduate student catcher Matt Tempone followed with runners on second and third, sending a single into right field to bring in a run for the 2-0 advantage. Sophomore third baseman Nick Bartalini capped the scoring in the frame, belting a three-run homer over the left field wall for the 5-1 lead.

In the top of the seventh, the Corsairs struck once again with a runner on as senior second baseman Devyn Vezina singled to right to bring home right fielder Scott Cromack. Holding the 6-1 lead, the Corsairs shut down the Beacons in the bottom of the seventh before the fog rolled in to conclude the game.
