Baseball Falls at Roger Williams in Non-Conference Action

Corsairs tripped up in final non-LEC regular season game

BRISTOL, R.I. – Backed by consistent runs and a big seventh inning, Roger Williams posted a victory over UMass Dartmouth in non-conference action on Thursday afternoon. The Hawks improve to 13-20 overall with the 12-0 win, while the Corsairs are now 16-17 on the season.
 
The homestanding Hawks carried a 1-0 lead into the fourth inning – after scoring in the opening frame – adding to their total on a run scored off a wild pitch. Roger Williams saw a run come across in both the bottom of the fifth and sixth innings, holding a 4-0 lead.
 
In the bottom of the seventh, RWU tacked on three runs, including a two-run double to center off the bat of senior Ethan Keeney to make it a 7-0 contest. The Corsairs worked to get something going in the top of the eighth as rookie second baseman Noah Bongiorno singled up the middle with two outs on the board.
 
The Hawks made a pitching change with senior Conor Quinlan came on in relief as the Corsairs saw sophomore second baseman Nick Bartalini reach first on an error. Despite the momentum, UMD saw rookie first baseman Mike Maselli ground out to end the frame.
 
Roger Williams added five runs in the bottom of the eighth to open up a wide margin and utilized solid pitching throughout the contest to seal the victory. Senior starter Matt Seminara went 6.1 innings to earn the victory, allowing no runs and just two hits with seven strikeouts.
 
The Corsairs saw Bongiorno go 2-for-3 at the plate, while on the mound, senior starter Ian-James McCasland shouldered the loss. He allowed two runs (1 earned on four hits over 3.2 innings of work. McCasland also struck out five batters in his appearance.
 
UMass Dartmouth is back in action on Friday, traveling to Eastern Connecticut State for a critical Little East doubleheader match-up against the Warriors. Action begins at 12pm, followed by game two soon after around 3pm.
