Softball Edged by Roger Williams in Regular Season Finale

BRISTOL, R.I. – The UMass Dartmouth softball team was edged by Roger Williams University, 4-1, on Friday afternoon in the regular season finale from Paolino Field. The Corsairs finish the regular season with a 20-16 overall record, and a 7-9 mark in Little East Conference (LEC) play, while the Hawks moved to 22-16 overall with the win.

The Hawks got on the scoreboard early thanks to an RBI single from Ava Fairbanks to give the home team a 1-0 edge after the first inning. Roger Williams continued to extend their lead in the next two innings, scoring three runs off a combined six hits to go ahead 4-0. The Corsairs cashed in a late run in the top of the seventh inning after junior Emma Talpey stole home, but the Hawks cemented their win by a final score of 4-1.

Talpey went 1-for-2 at the plate to go along with one run and a pair of stolen bases. Sophomore Chaylin Cruz Salgado had a 1-for-2 performance featuring the lone double of the day for UMass Dartmouth. Junior RaeLynn Perregaux and classmate Sydney Menz each went 1-for-3 for the Corsairs while senior Kinu Takasugi recorded her 20th stolen base of the season.

Sophomore pitcher Lily Routhier picked up the loss on the mound to close out the regular season with an 8-3 record after pitching all six innings. She allowed four earned runs, nine total hits, and one walk on 28 batters faced. Routhier also registered one strikeout after throwing 76 total pitches.
