Women's Soccer Tripped Up at Roger Williams

BRISTOL, R.I. – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth women's soccer team were tripped up by Roger Williams University, 5-0, on Wednesday night during a non-league matchup from Bayside Field. The Corsairs move to a 2-2-1 overall record while the Hawks secure their third win of the season.

UMass Dartmouth trailed 1-0 early in the contest after Elizabeth Yucius found the back of the net in the opening five minutes of action. A few minutes later, Corsairs goalkeeper Marina Cassano posted her first save of the night to deny a shot by Mya D'Antonio. The Hawks tacked on four more shots before first year Natalie Frazier ripped a shot that went just wide right of the net.

D'Antonio doubled Roger Williams lead at the 22:28 mark to put the home team up 2-0 midway through the opening half. After the Corsairs won a late free kick opportunity in the final minutes of the half, the Hawks quickly countered resulting in a shot by D'Antonio that hit the left post. Yucius collected the rebound and got a shot on target, but Cassano was there to make the stop to keep the game at 2-0 heading into the break.

Sophomore goalkeeper Tori Russo checked into the contest for UMass Dartmouth to start the second half and recorded her first save three minutes into play, respectively. At the 60:42 mark, Roger Williams extended their advantage to 3-0 with a goal by Julia Robbins. The Hawks added on two more goals including a penalty kick goal in the final 20 minutes of action to seal their 5-0 win over the Corsairs from Bayside Field.

Frazier ended the game with two shot attempts while senior captain Antonella Goncalves and first year Jesse Ayres each recorded one shot apiece for the Corsairs. In net, Cassano finished the first half with three saves and allowed two goals. In the second half, Russo produced a season-high four stops and allowed three goals in net for UMass Dartmouth.

The Corsairs open Little East Conference play on Saturday, Sept. 13 hosting the Huskies of the University of Southern Maine at 12:00 p.m. from Cressy Field.
