Men's Soccer Draws on the Road at Southern Maine

Camara scores equalizer and first goal of the season in LEC opener

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's soccer team opened Little East Conference (LEC) play with a tie against the University of Southern Maine, 1-1, on the road on Saturday afternoon. The Corsairs move to a 3-2-1 overall record on the season with the draw versus the Huskies who now own a 0-1-3 record.
 
Southern Maine snagged an early 1-0 lead in the opening seven minutes of play as Jack Brady scored the first goal of the afternoon for the Huskies. First year Lennon Rodrigues responded for the Corsairs with a shot on target that Huskies goalkeeper Gabe Wagner was able to deny for his first save of the game. Corsairs goalkeeper Ethan Donahue posted two saves as the home team registered five unanswered shots crossing the midway point of the first half. Sophomore Riley Rebello and first year Maddox Canario each produced a shot towards the end of the half, but the Huskies held on to their one-goal advantage entering halftime.  
 
UMass Dartmouth came out strong in the second half as sophomore Derrick Camara tied the game up with his first goal of the season in the opening two minutes of the second half to make it 1-1. Both teams exchanged shots approaching the final 10 minutes of the game with Donahue posting two saves off four shot attempts by Southern Maine. First year Aiden Marando had a late scoring opportunity in the 83rd minute, but his shot was stopped by Wagner enroute to a 1-1 draw.
 
Southern Maine outshot UMass Dartmouth 15-7 and held a 6-3 edge in total shots on-goal in the contest. The Huskies earned four corner kicks in the game compared to the Corsairs with one corner kick.
 
Camara scored both his first goal as a Corsair and on the season for two points with his second half equalizer. Marando and Rodrigues finished the game with one shot on target in the draw while senior fifth year Andrew Pacheco and first year Leonardo Alfama posted one shot apiece in the contest.
 
Donahue recorded five total saves in net for UMass Dartmouth and allowed just one goal on the afternoon. His counterpart produced two stops and allowed one goal in net for Southern Maine.
 
The Corsairs host Mitchell College on Tuesday, Sept. 16 for their next non-conference tilt scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff from Cressy Field.
