Men's Soccer Takes Down Mitchell College, 5-1

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's soccer team took down Mitchell College on Tuesday night in non-conference action by a final score of 5-1. First year Nick Scanlon led the Corsairs with his two-goal performance along with one assist for a career-high five points. UMass Dartmouth improved to a 4-2-1 overall record with the dominant home win over the Mariners who dropped to 1-5 overall.

First year Leonardo Alfama put the Corsairs on top 1-0 approximately 21 minutes into the opening half. Classmate Maddox Canario slipped the ball forward to Alfama who outpaced his defender to squeeze a shot into the back of the net and tally his first collegiate goal for the Corsairs. Sophomore Daniel Jordan doubled UMass Dartmouth's advantage in the 31st minute to make it a 2-0 game. Sophomore Delano Costa fed a pass behind Mitchell's backline that Jordan collected to fire a shot on target. Mariners goalkeeper Jesse Jenkins recorded the save however Jordan maintained possession and calmly tapped the ball in to give the Corsairs a two-goal lead.

In the final ten minutes of the half, sophomore Derrick Camara joined in on the scoring at the 37:42 mark to extend UMass Dartmouth to a 3-0 lead. Scanlon arced the ball high over Mitchell's defense to Camara who made a sliding effort to sneak the ball past Jenkins for his second goal of the season. Less than two minutes before halftime, Scanlon ripped a left-footed shot from the top of the box that deflected off Jenkins and rolled into the back of the net to pull the Corsairs away with a 4-0 lead.

Scanlon picked up where he left in the second half, netting his second goal of the night four minutes into play to take a 5-0 advantage over Mitchell. At the 65:06 mark, junior Cole Berman posted his first save of the game to deny a chance by Flavio Alvarado. Shortly after, the Mariners capitalized on a free kick that Diego Chavez curved into the top left corner to make it a 5-1 contest, but the Corsairs held on to secure their fourth win of the season by a final score of 5-1 from Cressy Field.

Scanlon finished the night with a career-high five points after scoring two goals and dishing out one assist.
