FRAMINGHAM, Mass. – It was a second quarter scoring game as Framingham State pulled out a 14-10 victory over UMass Dartmouth in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action on Saturday at Bowditch Field. The Rams move to 2-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play, while the Corsairs are now 1-2 and 1-1 in the MASCAC.
After a scoreless opening quarter, the Rams got on the board as rusher Jaheim Daniels ran it in from two yards out on a drive that took them nine plays and 68 yards into the Corsairs endzone at 8:59.
The Corsairs answered at 4:09 of the frame as rookie running back
Luke Turco carried the ball 16 yards into the FSU zone. Sophomore kicker
Connor McManus made the extra point to tie it up 7-all.
With 1:52 remaining in the second quarter, it was Daniels once again. This time, the running back made his way into the endzone from seven yards out, giving the Rams the 14-7 advantage.
UMass Dartmouth struck with just one second left on the clock as McManus drilled a 34-yard field goal through the uprights, making it a 14-10 game. The Corsairs had a solid attempt in the third quarter, driving down to the Rams six-yard line, but Framingham State intercepted the ball in the endzone to end the threat.
Later in the third, the Corsairs converted a 4th and 9 and had 1st and Goal at the Rams three-yard, but were unable to get into the endzone. Neither team was able to get into score again in the fourth as the game finished in the 14-10 margin.
For the Corsairs, Wilson posted his second straight game with 100+ yards rushing, finishing with 110 on 19 carries. Turco had 13 rushes for 84 yards with a touchdown, while in the kicking effort, McManus went 1-for-1 in PAT's and in field goal attempts with 147 punting yards and 90 yards on the kickoff.
Defensively, junior defensive back
Eli Matthews recorded a team-high nine tackles, including six solo. Sophomore linebacker
Dylan Lykins added eight tackles, including a team-high seven solo, while junior defensive edge
Owen Dunker added six tackles (five solo). Sophomore defensive edge
Ancil Alexander notched his first career sack for eight yards, while senior linebacker
Lamar Beaton also had a sack against the Rams for four yards.
UMass Dartmouth returns to action next Saturday, traveling to Anna Maria for a 1:30pm game against the AMCats in their first match up as conference-rivals and just the second all-time.
