Field Hockey Falls to Western Connecticut State in LEC Action

DANBURY, Conn. – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth field hockey team fell on the road in Little East Conference (LEC) action on Saturday afternoon against Western Connecticut State University by a final score of 4-1. The Corsairs are now 0-2 in conference play while the Wolves picked up their first Little East win of the season and moved to a 4-4 overall record.
 
Sophomore goalie Shane Cueman recorded her first save of the afternoon in the opening three minutes of the game to deny a shot by Reagan Schoen. Junior Brooke Lydon fired the first shot on frame for UMass Dartmouth to force a stop by Wolves goalie Jaden Kilmer, First year Kelly Bates had a scoring chance for the Corsairs at the 4:19 mark, but Kaitlyn Biase was there to record the defensive save.
 
Midway through the first period WestConn took a 1-0 lead after Miah Ruiz scored with 6:50 on the clock. Junior Arlene Johnson answered for the Corsairs halfway through the second period with the equalizer to make it a 1-1 game. After Cueman posted two saves in the closing minutes of the first half, Alyssa Montalvo squeezed in a late score in the final few seconds to give WestConn a 2-1 edge at halftime.
 
Junior captain Sam Gacioch kicked off the third period with a shot on target that Biase was able to stop for the Wolves. WestConn ripped six shots in the period with Cueman tacking on three more saves in the cage. The Wolves extended their advantage to 3-1 late in the third to take a two-goal lead in the final period. Schoen notched her second score of the day for WestConn to start the fourth period. Junio captain Sophia Bouffard registered a shot on frame for the Corsairs, but the Wolves sealed their victory by a final score 4-1.
 
Johnson notched her second goal of the season for two points in the game. Four other Corsairs posted a shot on target including Lydon, Bates, Gacioch, and Bouffard.
 
Cueman produced 12 saves in the cage for UMass Dartmouth and allowed four goals on the afternoon. Kilmer ended the contest with two stops and one goal allowed in net for the Wolves.
 
UMass Dartmouth returns home for their Corsair Game of the Week hosting Smith College on Tuesday, September 30th at 7:00 p.m. from Cressy Field.
