Men's Soccer Edged by Western Connecticut State on the Road

DANBURY, Conn. – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's soccer team were edged by Western Connecticut State University during a Little East Conference (LEC) road tilt by a final score of 1-0. The Corsairs move to a 1-1-1 conference mark and are now 5-3-1 overall while the Wolves secure their third consecutive league win of the season.
 
Junior Matt Kobrenski and sophomore Brennan Hill each tested the Wolves goalkeeper Makai Smith early in the game with shots on target. Shortly after Corsairs goalkeeper Ethan Donahue posted his first stop of the afternoon, WestConn grabbed a 1-0 lead with 23:19 on the clock thanks to a score by Matthews Rocha. First year Leonardo Alfama fired his first shot on frame in the game in the final 10 minutes of the opening half, but Smith was able to produce the stop to keep the Wolves ahead 1-0 at halftime.
 
WestConn recorded three shots, including one that bounced off the crossbar, to kick off the second half of the game. Midway through the half, the Wolves posted another four shots featuring one save by Donahue to keep the Wolves off the scoreboard. In the final 10 minutes of play, the Corsairs started to generate attacking momentum with shots by first years Maddox Canario and Nick Scanlon. First year Aiden Marando and first year Jack Martin each posted a shot on frame for the Corsairs, but Smith recorded the saves to seal WestConn's win by a final score of 1-0.
 
The Wolves outshot the Corsairs by a 19-7 margin and held a 6-5 edge in shots on-goal in the game. WestConn earned six corner kicks compared to UMass Dartmouth with two corner kicks in the contest. The Corsairs committed 16 total fouls while the Wolves were called for eight fouls.
 
Five Corsairs finished the game with one shot on-goal including Kobrenski, Hill, Alfama, Marando, and Martin. In net, Donahue picked up the loss after recording five total saves and allowing just one goal on the afternoon. Smith earned the shutout after making five stops in net for the Wolves.  
 
UMass Dartmouth is back in action on Wednesday, October 1st playing at Salem State University scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff.
