Stewart & Marshall Power Men's Hockey Past UMass Boston

Duo combines for a hat trick and 51 saves in 5-2 victory over Beacons

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. – Powered by a hat trick from senior winger Tyler Stewart and a career-high 51 saves from Marshall McKallip, the UMass Dartmouth men's hockey team posted a 5-2 victory over UMass Boston on Saturday at Hetland Arena. With the victory, the Corsairs move to 10-7-0 and are now 5-5-0 in conference play. The Beacons slip to 10-7-0 on the season with a 5-5-0 mark in the LEC.

Stewart got things going on the power play at 9:28 of the first as he fired home a pass from rookie center Kailin Chen down low. The Corsairs made it a 2-0 game at the 16:47 mark with Stewart netting his second of the game. Off a pass in from the point by sophomore defender Hunter Scanlon, junior center and assistant captain Nolan Wutzke sent a shot in that Stewart was able to bang home.

Heading into the second period, UMass Dartmouth made it a 3-0 score on the first collegiate goal by rookie winger Levee Pakozdi at the 2:49 mark. Sophomore winger Blake Karshark earned the primary assist, firing in a shot that banked out to Pakozdi at the bottom of the left circle as he fired it in.

The Beacons closed the gap late in the second period as senior left wing Jazz Krivstov connected on a feed from linemate Jack Mortson at 4:15, while Mortson countered just over a minute later to make it a 3-2 game heading into the final period of play.

Stewart completed the hat trick at 15:48 as a shot from the top of the slot by sophomore defender Brennen Pecararo caromed in on goal, allowing Stewart to fire it in from the left post. Scanlon – who assisted on the first and second goals of the game – earned the secondary assist.

The Corsairs completed the scoring at 18:57 as Kashark found the puck off the stick of a Beacons defender, lifting it up and down the ice into the empty net.

McKallip finished with a career-high 51 saves, including 24 saves in the second period. In the circle, Chen went 13-22 on the faceoff, while junior center Connor Little – who earned the secondary assist on the game's third goal – was a near perfect 13-16 in the circle.

UMass Dartmouth returns to action next weekend, traveling to Vermont for an LEC series against Vermont State University Castleton (Friday, 7pm) and Norwich University (Saturday, 4pm).
