Corsairs shoulder tough loss to nationally-ranked Beavers

BABSON PARK, Mass. – Babson College saw five different players record goals enroute to a Little East Conference victory over UMass Dartmouth in men's hockey action on Saturday. The #11 Beavers move to 18-3-2 overall and 13-2-1 in conference play, while the Corsairs are now 10-12-0 and 5-11-0 in the LEC.

After a three-goal opening period by the home team, the Corsairs came back in the second period with a tally by rookie Kailin Chen. Connecting off a feed from junior winger Alex Walker, Chen netted his fourth goal of the weekend at 4:43 to make it a 3-1 game.

Despite the momentum, the Beavers tacked on three straight goal, including the third of game for Babson's Jimmy Fallon for the hat-trick and a 6-1 advantage after two periods of play.

The Corsairs fired back to open the third period as rookie winger Chris Cardillo banged home a shot to pull it to a 6-2 game. He was assisted by senior defender Hank McDonough and sophomore blueliner Brennen Pecararo.

Senior assistant captain and winger Tyler Stewart then made it a 6-3 contest, scoring on the power play at 11:58 off a pass from senior captain and defender Lane Ruffner. Walker earned the secondary assist on the play.

The Corsairs were unable to fend off the Beavers, pulling the goalie in favor of an extra-attacker, but the home team capitalized with an empty net tally for the final score.

Senior goalie Marshall McKallip shouldered the loss on Saturday, recording 40 stops in the Corsairs net, including 20 saves in the opening period. Sophomore winger Blake Kashark was credited with a game-high four blocked shots.

UMass Dartmouth returns to the ice next weekend for the regular season finale against WestConn (Friday; 5:30pm) and Keene State (Saturday; 4:30pm). Saturday's contest against the Owls will mark Senior Day for the Corsairs graduating players.
