Women's Lacrosse Powers Past Buccaneers, 18-6

Allen tallies game-high five goals to pace Corsairs past Mass. Maritime

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Backed by a game-high five goals from junior Maddy Allen, the UMass Dartmouth women's lacrosse team posted an 18-6 victory over Massachusetts Maritime Academy on Cressy Field. The Corsairs move to 2-2 overall, while the Buccaneers are now 0-2.

The Corsairs got things going quickly in the opening quarter as Allen – a midfielder and captain – netted her first off a nice pass from classmate Tori Roberts at 13:50. Less than a minute later it was junior captain and attack Katie Hague as she banked a tally at 13:02, followed by another at 11:56 to put the home team up 3-0.

Mass. Maritime battled back as goals from Sabrina Andrews and Maggie O'Malley but the deficit to one (3-2) for the visitors heading into the second quarter. A goal from graduate student attack and captain Emma Terino off a feed from Roberts pushed it to 4-2 at 10:08 of the second, but the Buccaneers countered once again as Sarah Naar capitalized to make it a one goal (4-3) once again.

UMass Dartmouth answered at 8:15 as Allen scored, followed by a tally from Terino off a feed from rookie midfielder Cat Whitehouse. Allen netted two more tallies soon after to push the Corsairs to an 8-3 lead with 3:39 to play. Naar closed out the scoring at 1:21, sending the team's into halftime with the score 8-4.

Out of the intermission, the Corsairs got man-up goals from Terino and rookie midfielder Carleigh Swenson for a 10-4 advantage, but the Bucs answered again on a man-up tally from Brady Deschamps.

Whitehouse scored with 1:30 to play in the third and added a lead-off goal in the fourth to expand the lead to 12-5. Naar was able to score for the visitors, but a miscue by the Buccaneers goalie saw her push the ball into the net for an own goal in favor of UMD. Five straight goals followed for the Corsairs, including tallies by Terino, Swenson, Allen, junior attack Jennifer Lins and Hague to conclude the game scoring.

Allen finished with five goals and an assist, adding 13 shots (9 on goal) with two ground balls, three caused turnovers and three draw controls. Terino netted four goals with an assist, adding a ground ball, a caused turnover and recording a career-high 17 draw control wins. Whitehouse posted two goals with four assists, while Hague completed the hat trick with three scores. Sophomore goalie Keira Bushey had seven saves over 58:15 of action, while rookie Irelynn Marshall played the final 1:45 and was not forced to make a save.

The Corsairs owned a 35-17 margin in shots, including 19-11 on goal. The team went 12-of-16 on the clear and owned a 23-3 margin in draw controls – of which Terino had 17 of the wins.
