DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Backed by a career-record day from junior midfielder
Maddy Allen and several other outstanding performances, the UMass Dartmouth women's lacrosse team recorded a 21-10 victory over Regis College on Saturday at Cressy Field. The win moves the Corsairs to 3-2 overall, while the Pride are now 0-2 on the young season.
Allen had an incredible day, notching career-high's in goals (7), assists (4), points (11), shots (18) and shots on goal (12). She added three ground balls with two caused turnovers and six draw controls. Graduate student attacker and captain
Emma Terino posted two goals with five assists for seven points – including a career and game-high 18 draw controls, while junior attack
Jennifer Lins recorded a career-high three-goals with three assists (ties career-best) and six points.
Rookie midfielder
Cat Whitehouse posted three goals with two assists for five points – her three goals were a single game career-high, while classmate and fellow midfielder
Carleigh Swenson notched a single-game best three goals with three assists for six points. Sophomore attack
Abby Pitts added two goals and an assist for three points – posting single-game career-high's in goals and points.
It was a tight contest to open the game as Regis netted the first goal on a tally by Maddie Sainato, but the Corsairs tied it up quickly on a score by sophomore attack
Abby Pitts. The two teams continued to trade goals, locked in a 4-4 score until Swenson netted her second of the game off a feed from Allen to push the Corsairs into a lead they did not relinquish.
That goal was followed by a score from junior attack
Katie Hague, while Allen tallied her first of the game at 10:50 of the second quarter for a 7-4 advantage. The Pride added a man-up score, but UMass Dartmouth tacked on a pair of goals from Lins and Whitehouse with Allen adding another score in the final minute of play to send the squads into halftime with the Corsairs up 10-7.
Out of the break, the Corsairs surrendered a goal to the visitors, but countered with four straight scores by Terino, Swenson, Pitts and Whitehouse to make it a 14-7 contest with 5:49 left in the third quarter.
In the final quarter of play, Allen broke the game further open, netting three straight goals to open the frame – all within two minutes – before notching scores at 4:57 and 3:24 to push the margin to 19-20. Whitehouse and Lins each added goals to close out the game and the final 21-10 margin.
The Corsairs, who owned a 36-31 margin in shots – including 28-15 on goal, saw sophomore netminder
Keira Bushey earn the victory with eight saves on the afternoon. Rookie
Irelynn Marshall played the final 5:41 of the game, posting one save.
UMass Dartmouth returns to action on Sunday, traveling to Bates College for the first-ever meeting against the Bobcats. Action gets underway at 12pm in Lewiston, Maine.
