Softball Earns Split in Wednesday Action

Corsairs defeat UMaine Farmington, 2-0; Fall to Cortland, 3-2

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The UMass Dartmouth softball team split action on Wednesday in The Spring Games, defeating UMaine Farmington, 2-0 before shouldering a narrow loss to SUNY Cortland, 3-2 in game two.

The Corsairs put up the game's first run in the bottom of the first, paced by a triple to right by senior third baseman RaeLynn Perregaux. Junior designated player Olivia Silva was up next, sending a grounder to short that brought home the runner from third for the 1-0 advantage.

In the bottom of the second, UMass Dartmouth struck again with senior catcher Lena Tsonis singling up the middle to lead it off, later advancing on a passed ball. Senior second baseman Emma Talpey stepped up to the plate, banking a triple into right center to bring home Tsonis for a 2-0 advantage.

Rookie pitcher Brielle Kenney was outstanding, shutting down the Beavers bats with several 1-2-3 innings. For the game, she went 7.0 innings, allowing no runs on just two hits. Kenney struck out five batters as well. At the plate, Perregaux went 2-for-2 with a run scored, while Tsonis was 3-for-3 with a run scored. Silva and Talpey were each credited with an RBI.

Game two action saw the Red Dragons open a 2-0 lead as a single up the middle drove in a pair of runs. The Corsairs answered in the top of the second as sophomore left fielder Lily Routhier singled, followed by a sacrifice bunt from senior center fielder Sydney Menz to move the runner to third.

Rookie first baseman Bre Fontes then singled down the left field line to bring home the run and narrow the gap to 2-1. It was a quiet stretch over the next three innings until the bottom of the sixth as Cortland's McAnally singled to right to bring in a run and open a 3-1 margin.

In the top of the seventh, the Corsairs worked to get back into the game and with an out on the board, Tsonis singled to left. Sophomore designated player Nina O'Neil then singled through the right side and Silva doubled to right to bring home the run and cut the deficit. Despite the momentum, UMD was unable to close the gap.

Perregaux batted 2-for-4, while Routhier was 2-for-3 with a run scored. Fontes was 1-for-3 with an RBI, while Silva was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Rookie shortstop Chloe Edwards was 1-for-2 with a run scored while in the circle, sophomore Edy Crawford went 6.0 innings. She allowed three runs on nine hits with a strikeout.

UMass Dartmouth is back in action on Thursday, wrapping up their Florida trip with games against Manchester University (10am) and Endicott College (12:30pm) at the Fortune Road Athletic Complex.
