WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The UMass Dartmouth baseball team wrapped up spring break action on Thursday at the RussMatt Invitational with a tough loss to Kalamazoo College at Chain O'Lakes Park. The Corsairs are now 6-11 on the season.
UMass Dartmouth opened the scoring in the top of the second inning as a sacrifice fly to center by senior third baseman
Jake San Antonio drove in a run for the 1-0 lead. The Hornets answered in the bottom of the frame as a double to left center from Jackson Isaacs tied the game, while a single to left from Jack Friesen made it a 2-1 advantage.
In the bottom of the third, Kalamazoo tacked on eight runs, paced by a two-run homer to left by Caleb Moore and a two-run single through the right side by Friesen to push the margin to 10-1. The Hornets added seven runs in the bottom of the fourth and posted two more in the fifth for a 19-1 advantage.
In the top of the seventh, the Corsairs saw rookie right fielder
Sam Bradford belt a three-run home run over the left field wall, closing the gap to 19-4 and senior center fielder
Brett Baker hit a two-run double to left center to make it a 19-6 score, but the Corsairs could not get any closer.
Bradford went 1-for-2 with a run scored and three RBI, while Baker had a hit with two runs batted in. Sophomore designated hitter
Luc Nivaud was 2-for-2 with two runs scored as San Antonio went 1-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI.
On the mound, junior
Leo Colena shouldered the loss with 2.2 innings pitched. He struck out three batters while allowing nine hits. Classmate Gio Arzquaga went 0.2 in relief with a strikeout and three hits allowed, while junior
Alex Tawa struck out one and allowed one hit in 0.2 of relief. Senior
Dane LeBert pitched 1.0 innings with two strikeouts and two hits allowed, while classmate
Ray Boutiette pitched the final inning with no hits or runs allowed and three strikeouts.
The Corsairs return from Florida and are right back in action on Saturday, opening Little East Conference action at home against the University of Southern Maine. First pitch of the conference doubleheader is set for 12pm.
