DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The UMass Dartmouth women's lacrosse team shouldered a tough loss in Little East action on Friday, falling 13-7 to Plymouth State University on Cressy Field. The Panthers move to 2-5 and are 1-0 in conference play, while the Corsairs are now 3-6 and 0-2 in the LEC.
The Corsairs came out firing as an unassisted tally from graduate student captain and attack
Emma Terino on the man-up made it a 1-0 score at 13:51. Junior captain and midfielder
Maddy Allen answered just under a minute later, tallying back-to-back goals off feeds from classmate and attack
Jennifer Lins for a 3-0 UMD lead with 11:49 to play in the opening quarter.
Plymouth State responded later in the frame as tallies from Morgan Cunningham, Karina Bosco and Grace Hoover saw the game knotted at 3-3 before a tally from Claire Joyce at 2:56 gave the visitors a lead they didn't surrender for the remainder of the game.
Joyce tacked on two more goals into the second quarter, while Bosco and Cunningham each added scores as the Panthers opened an 8-3 advantage with 8:39 to play. The Corsairs got one back as Terino scored off a feed from rookie
Hanna Guay – the first collegiate point of her career – closing the gap to 8-4.
Allen went on a tear, dropping in two goals in the final 1:02 of the second before opening the third quarter with her fifth tally of the game at 8:06 to cut the deficit to 8-7. Despite the momentum, Cunningham added a pair of goals in the closing minutes of the third and three goals in the fourth made it a 13-7 final score.
Allen recorded a game-high five goals, posting 10 shots (8 on goal) with four ground balls, two caused turnovers and a game-best seven draw controls. Terino posted two goals with a ground ball and six draw controls, while rookie defender
Myra Watkins-Rodriguez and midfielder
Cat Whitehouse each had two caused turnovers. In goal, sophomore
Keira Bushey made eight saves.
UMass Dartmouth returns to action on Tuesday, traveling to Fitchburg State University for a 6pm tilt against the Falcons.
