Freshman garners first weekly honors of 2026

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Little East has announced their weekly honorees in baseball and UMass Dartmouth freshman Jayden Cruz has been named the Rookie of the Week. This comes on the heels of an outstanding effort last week to help the Corsairs go 3-0 overall.
 
Cruz, a second baseman from Somerset, Mass., started all three games last week with a .385 batting average.  He recorded five hits in 14 at-bats with a team-high seven runs scored and two runs batted in. Cruz was also a perfect 6-for-6 in stolen base attempts to lead the team.
 
In a 9-1 victory over Suffolk University on Thursday, Cruz had a hit with two runs scored and a run batted in. He also stole two bases. Then, in a 19-1 victory in game one on Sunday at WestConn, Cruz was 3-for-3 at the plate with three runs scored. Additionally, he was walked twice and was a perfect 4-for-4 in stolen base attempts. Cruz added a hit and two runs scored with an RBI in a 16-3 game two victory over the Wolves.
 
Through 22 games played this season, Cruz is batting .329 (23-of-70) with a team-high 23 runs scored. Of his 23 hits, three have been doubles and one a triple. He also has 12 runs batted in and leads the team with 12 stolen bases in 14 attempts. Currently, Cruz ranks second in the Little East in stolen bases. He is also sixth in runs scored and 11th in hits.
 
UMass Dartmouth (9-13; 2-2 LEC) return to action on Saturday when they host Eastern Connecticut State in LEC doubleheader action. First pitch is set for 12pm.
