PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Little East Conference (LEC) has announced its weekly honorees in baseball and UMass Dartmouth student-athlete
Sam Bradford was recognized. The freshman earned Rookie of the Week honors after a solid performance as the Corsairs swept a doubleheader against SUNY Brockport on Sunday.
Bradford, a right fielder from Yarmouth, Maine, had an incredible effort against the Golden Eagles as he batted .500, going 5-for-10 at the plate with four runs scored and two runs batted in. Of his five hits, one was a double and two were home runs - including the first of his career. In a 7-4 game one win, he went 2-for-5 in the leadoff spot, pushing across a run scored. Bradford singled to center in the bottom of the first and singled to center again in the bottom of the eighth before scoring on a throwing error  in the inning to make it a 6-4 game.
Then, in an 8-2 victory in game two, Bradford went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI. He belted a home run over the left field wall to lead off the bottom of the first inning for his first collegiate home run. He then hit another home run to left in the bottom of the second to make it a 3-0 game. Bradford also had a run scored in the bottom of the sixth to make it a 6-1 game.
Through eight games played, the right fielder leads the Corsairs with a .484 batting average - going 15-of-31 at the plate. In addition to a team-high 10 runs scored, he has produced four doubles, a team-best three home runs and eight runs batted in. Bradford has been waslked three times and has a team-high 28 total bases. His on-base percentage is currently .529, while he owns a .903 slugging percentage as a starter in all eight contests this season.
UMass Dartmouth (2-6) returns to action on Friday when it opens Spring Break action at the RussMatt Tournament down South. UMD faces the University of Saint Joseph in doubleheader action at Northeast Regional Park in Davenport, Florida beginning at 3:45pm.
