DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Behind a go-ahead single in the bottom of the sixth from rookie
Bre Fontes, the UMass Dartmouth softball team split a doubleheader against Brandeis University on Tuesday. The Corsairs posted a 5-4 win in game two, while the Judges picked up the 7-1 victory in the opener. UMD moves to 11-5 overall and Brandeis is 13-7.
Game two action saw the Judges open a 4-0 victory after two innings of play, but the Corsairs came battling back as an RBI single to left scored junior
Olivia Silva from third. Later, with two outs in the frame and bases loaded, senior centerfielder
Sydney Menz belted a two-run double to center field to narrow the gap to 4-3.
In the bottom of the fifth – once again with bases loaded and two outs – rookie shortstop
Chloe Edwards reached first on a fielding error that saw Fontes come in to score and tie the game at 4-4.
The Corsairs carried that momentum into the bottom of the sixth as senior infielder
RaeLynn Perregaux reached first on a throwing error by the shortstop, advancing to second. Fontes was next at the plate, launching a single to center that allowed Perregaux to come around and score for the one-run lead (5-4).
In the top of the seventh, junior hurler
Lily Routhier allowed just a single , forcing two ground outs and a fly out to end the game and grab the victory.
Fontes went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, while Silva went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Senior catcher
Lena Tsonis was 2-for-3 with a run scored and a run batted in as Menz was 2-for-4 with two RBI. In the circle, Routhier earned the victory, pitching 5.0 innings of relief. She allowed no runs on four hits with a strikeout. Starter
Edy Crawford went 2.0 innings with four runs allowed on seven hits with a strikeout.
Game one saw the Judges open a 3-0 score after the top of the third, including a two-run double down the left field line by third baseman Jordan Wallace. In the bottom of the fourth, Fontes scored the Corsairs lone run, doubling down the right field line to bring Routhier home.
A two-run double by Bells Burdenski in the top of the fifth and her sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh saw Brandeis seal the victory.
Fontes was 1-for-3 with an RBI, while Routhier was 1-for-3 with a run scored. Menz, Perregaux, Tsonis, junior right fielder
Olivia Ali and Edwards all had hits in the game. In the circle, Crawford went 7.0 innings, allowing seven runs (4 earned) on 10 hits. She struck out three batters.
UMass Dartmouth returns to action on Saturday when they travel to Providence for a Little East doubleheader at Rhode Island College. First pitch is set for 12pm.
