Women's Lacrosse Falls to UMass Boston on Wednesday

Corsairs shoulder tough 16-10 loss to the Beacons

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Despite a career-high five goals from rookie midfielder Carleigh Swenson, the UMass Dartmouth women's lacrosse team could not battle back, falling 16-10 to UMass Boston in Little East Conference action on Wednesday. The loss moves the Corsairs to 3-11 overall and 0-5 in conference play.
 
The visiting Beacons opened the game's scoring at 12:41 as Angelina Mazzone fired in a pass from Jamie McAleavey. That goal was followed just over a minute later by a man-up tally from Morgan Holohan, burying a feed from Rae Alexander for the first of her game-high eight goals on the night.
 
Swenson got the Corsairs on the board at 10:35 of the first, connecting on a pass from rookie attack Hanna Guay, but Holohan answered with back-to-back goals for a 4-1 advantage with 8:27 remaining in the quarter. Sophomore Abby Pitts scored a man-up goal of her own for UMD, adding a second tally with 50 seconds remaining to send the two teams into the second quarter with the visitors up 4-3.
 
Three straight Beacons goals opened the second quarter, including a pair from Kaitlyn Ondrick, but Swenson netted her 18th of the season and second of the game at 7:27 to cut the deficit (7-4). UMass Boston went on a 5-0 run, including three more goals from Holohan to head into halftime with the 12-4 lead.
 
Out of the break, the Corsairs saw rookie midfielder Cat Whitehouse score on the man-up at 12:08 off a feed from junior midfielder Tori Roberts. Less than five minutes later it was Roberts' turn as she netted her first career goal at 7:28. The Beacons added two more goals before back-to-back tallies from Swenson saw the margin more to 14-8 in favor of the visitors at the 14:48 mark of the final quarter.
 
Another Beacons goal came at 8:53, but Swenson added her fifth of the game and Pitts tallied her third of the contest to close the gap to 16-10 with 2:05 remaining. The Corsairs tried to narrow it further but were unable to solve the UMB defense down the stretch.
 
Swenson posted five goals with a caused turnover and three draw controls, while Pitts had three tallies and a helper. She added a ground ball. Whitehouse posted a goal and an assists with a ground ball, a caused turnover and a team-high five draw controls, while Roberts had a goal and an assist with two ground balls.
 
Junior midfielder Maddy Allen had four ground balls with a caused turnover and four draw controls, while rookie defender Myra Watkins-Rodriguez posted a game-high seven ground balls – helping the Corsairs own a 22-20 margin for the game. In goal, sophomore Keira Bushey made nine saves.
 
UMass Dartmouth returns to action on Saturday, hosting Eastern Connecticut State at 11am on Cressy Field.
