PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The UMass Dartmouth softball team posted a doubleheader split on Saturday at Rhode Island College in Little East Conference action. The Corsairs posted a 6-4 win in game two, shouldering a tough 11-10 loss in eight innings in game one. UMD moves to 12-6 overall and 2-2 in conference play.
In the game two victory, the Corsairs opened the scoring in the top of the first as with bases loaded, senior centerfielder
Sydney Menz was walked to bring a run across. Later, rookie first baseman
Bre Fontes made her way home from third following a wild pitch. The Corsairs then got an RBI single to left from sophomore second baseman
Nina O'Neil as the visitors opened a 3-0 lead.
The Anchorwomen countered in the bottom of the frame as an RBI double from Melanie Earley and a grounder to second from Jillian Guilfoyle closed the gap to 3-2.
In the Corsairs fifth, Routhier sent an RBI single to left for a 4-2 lead, but Rhode Island answered again, closing the margin to one (4-3) on a triple to center. The Corsairs responded in the seventh as Routhier doubled to left, while senior catcher
Lena Tsonis reached on a fielding error as Routhier came around to score for the 6-3 lead.
Rhode Island College saw Sophia Crudale single through the right side to drive in another run, but Routhier got the final batter to ground into a double play to end the game.
In the circle, Routhier earned the victory, going 7.0 innings to improve to 3-0. She allowed four runs on six hits with a strikeout. She also went 2-for-4 at the plate with a run scored and two runs batted in. O'Neil had a hit with an RBI, while junior right fielder
Olivia Ali was 2-for-4 with a run scored. Junior left fielder
Olivia Silva was 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Menz had a run scored and an RBI.
Game one action saw the Corsairs open up a 7-2 advantage through three innings, backed by a two-run home run to left from Routhier, coupled with an RBI double to left center from senior third baseman
RaeLynn Perregaux.
The fifth inning saw the Corsairs push the margin to 10-3 as Fontes singled to drive in a run, but the Anchorwomen came roaring back in the fifth, driving in five runs – including a two-run double to left to make it a 10-8 game.
Rhode Island College got a two-run double to left by Sydney Duclos to tie the contest at 10-all and send the game to extra innings. In the bottom of the eighth with bases loaded and one out on the board, Gabrielle Sweeney sent a sacrifice fly to center, bringing the game-winning run across.
Perregaux went 3-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI, while Fontes was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI. Routhier had a hit with a run scored and three runs batted in as Menz added a hit, a run scored and an RBI.
In the circle, the Corsairs saw rookie
Brielle Kenney go 4.2 innings, allowing eight runs (6 earned) on eight hits. She struck out four batters and walked two. Sophomore
Edy Crawford shouldered the loss, pitching the final 3.0 innings with three runs allowed on seven hits with two strikeouts.
The Corsairs return to action on Tuesday, traveling to Norton, Mass., for a doubleheader at Wheaton College. First pitch of game one is set for 3pm.
