Fontes Earns Rookie of the Week Honors From LEC

First year tabbed for weekly honors after strong effort last week

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Little East Conference has announced its weekly honorees in softball and UMass Dartmouth student-athlete Bre Fontes has been recognized. The first year was named the conference's Rookie of the Week after a strong performance for the Corsairs last week.
 
Fontes, a first baseman from Swansea, Mass., batted a team-high .583 (7-for-12) as a starter in four games last week. She posted a team-best five runs scored with four runs batted in. Additionally, she recorded 34 putouts with one assist and no errors in the field.
 
In a tough loss to Brandeis on Tuesday, she had a hit with an RBI, blasting a double down the left field line to get the Corsairs on the board in the 7-1 loss. She then went 2-for-4 in game two against the Judges, posting a run scored with an RBI in the 5-4 victory. Among her hits was the game-winning RBI single to center in the bottom of the sixth.
 
Fontes then went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI in a tough 11-10 (8 inning) loss at Rhode Island College on Saturday. She had an RBI single to right in the first to put the Corsairs on the board, adding a single in the fourth and an RBI single in the fifth. In game two, Fontes went 1-for-1 with a run scored. She was walked three times in the 6-4 victory over RIC in each of her first three at-bats, recording a hit in the top of the seventh.
 
A starter in all 18 games this season for the Corsairs, Fontes is batting .348 (16-of-46) posting 11 runs scored and 10 runs batted in. Of her 16 hits, four have been doubles. She has also recorded 117 putouts and five assists with no errors in the field this season. Amongst the LEC leaders, Fontes ranks sixth in the conference in walks (11).
 
UMass Dartmouth (12-2; 2-2 Little East) returns to action on Tuesday, traveling to Wheaton College for doubleheader action. First pitch of game one is set to begin at 3pm.
