Field Hockey Pulls Away from Fitchburg State, 4-1

Box Score

Oct. 20, 2011

Final Stats

NORTH DARTMOUTH, MA-Junior forward Eleanor Taylor (Fairhaven, MA/Bishop Stang HS) scored twice in the final seven minutes to allow the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's field hockey team to pull away from visiting Fitchburg State, 4-1, in a Little East Conference match at Cressy Field Thursday evening.

Taylor converted a pass from sophomore forward Kayla Ribsam (Lambertville, NJ/South Hunterdon Regional HS) with 6:27 remaining, then scored again with 3:17 to play as the Corsairs put the game away.

Sophomore defender Victoria Dolce (Jamestown, RI/North Kingstown HS) had staked the Corsairs to a 1-0 lead, converting passes from Taylor and junior defender Taryn Cardiel (Moorpark, CA/Moorpark HS) and scoring at the 26:35 mark. Junior forward Erica Allan (Amherst, MA/Amherst HS) made it 2-0 when she converted a pass from Cardiel off a penalty corner at 40:31, but senior Megan Jacobs cut the UMD lead in half with a goal 1:20 later.

"It was a much closer game than the final score indicated," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Nicole Castonguay. "We took a much-needed time out to slow down their momentum. Fitchburg has some dangerous players, and after that time out, we got it together. (Sophomore goalkeeper) Kelsey (Gallo, East Greenwich, RI/East Greenwich HS) was awesome in goal, she made some important saves, and we did what we needed to do."

The Corsairs outshot the Falcons, 11-10. Gallo made seven saves for UMD, while senior Taylor Begin (Haverhill, MA/Haverhill HS) made six saves for FSU.

The Corsairs improved to 9-6 and 8-1 in the Little East Conference with the victory, while the Falcons dropped to 7-6 and 4-4 in LEC action with the defeat. UMass Dartmouth will return to action when they visit Keene State Saturday. Fitchburg State will host Southern Maine Saturday.
