Box Score 2 BUZZARDS BAY, MA-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's softball team swept a doubleheader against host Massachusetts Maritime at Allison Rollins Field Friday. The Corsairs won, 13-2 and 12-0 in a pair of games that were ended after five innings because of the eight-run rule.
In the opener, freshman left fielder Samantha Gregoire (Dartmouth, MA/Dartmouth HS) and sophomore shortstop Emily Pontes (Tewksbury, MA/Essex Agricultural HS) each singled in a run in the first two innings, then Pontes walked with the bases loaded and Gregoire hit a sacrifice fly in the fourth. Junior third baseman Breanna Marcyoniak (Westfield, MA/Westfield HS) added a two-run single. Pontes and Gregoire had run-scoring hits in the fifth, freshman center fielder Olivia Kenyon (Canton, MA/Canton HS) tripled home a run and freshman second baseman Jenna Sylvia (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) drove home another run with a sacrifice fly.
Senior right hander Ashley Felaccio (Acushnet, MA/New Bedford HS/Massasoit CC) allowed two hits, walked three and struck out seven in pitching the first three innings and getting the win to improve to 1-2. Freshman right hander Becky Williams (Hope Valley, RI/Chariho HS) finished up. Janelle Beaulieu went all the way for the Bucs and took the loss, falling to 1-4.
In the nightcap, senior Brittany Eldridge (Sr. Raynham, MA/Bridgewater-Raynham HS) and Williams combined for a no-hitter, limiting the Bucs to six base runners on three walks, two hit batters and an error. Eldridge pitched four innings and improved her record to 2-3 before Williams finished up.
Senior designated hitter Hannah Rounds (Lincoln, RI/Lincoln HS) drove in a run with a sacrifice fly as the Corsairs took an early 2-0 lead before exploding for 10 runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Pontes hit a three-run, inside the park home run in a three-run fourth inning, which also included an RBI double by winning pitcher Brittany Eldridge (Sr. Raynham, MA/Bridgewater-Raynham HS) and run-scoring singles by Kenyon and senior first baseman Kaitlin Hogan (Tewksbury, MA/Shawsheen HS). Eldridge doubled home two more runs and Rounds had a run-scoring single in the fifth. Jennifer March took the loss and fell to 1-4.
"We came out strong and we were aggressive," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Amy Sasin. "We showed our confidence at the plate, and it carried us right through. It was a good day to build confidence, and just a good overall effort, we got offense from everyone."
UMass Dartmouth improved to 3-9, while Mass Maritime fell to 2-8. The Corsairs will return to action when they host UMass Boston for a Little East Conference doubleheader Sunday.
