Baseball Drops Spring Opener to Ripon, 6-1

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

AUBURNDALE, FL-The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth's baseball team surrendered five unearned runs and fell to Ripon, 6-1,  in their 2013 spring opener at the Russ Matt Tournament at Lake Myrtle Field #4 Friday evening.

The Red Hawks scored six runs on only five hits.

UMass Dartmouth was limited to three hits, one of which, a double by sophomore outfielder Mike LaFlamme (Bedford, MA/Bedford HS), scored junior outfielder Wayne Bolz (Billerica, MA/Billerica Memorial HS), who had reached on an error, in the eighth inning to cut UMD's deficit to 6-1. Bolz (single) and senior catcher Matt Worden (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford HS) had the other Corsair hits.

"We had four freshman pitchers who threw the ball well, which was encouraging, but did not execute defensively," said UMass Dartmouth Head Coach Bob Prince. "We didn't get enough people on base offensively. We did turn four double plays, and, hopefully, we will play better Saturday."

UMass Dartmouth dropped to 0-1 with the defeat, while Ripon improved to 4-6 with the victory. The Corsairs will play Trinity (CT) in a doubleheader Saturday. Ripon concluded their spring trip and will host Lakeland (WI) next Saturday.
