Box Score DARTMOUTH, Mass. – Senior Shelby Friedland (New Bedford, Mass.) gave the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth an early 1-0 advantage, but Worcester State University responded with the equalizer in the second stanza as the two teams settled for a 1-1, double overtime draw this evening in a NCAA Division III women's soccer match played on Cressy Field.
Prior to the start of the match, the Corsairs honored their three seniors—Logan Becker (Littleton, Mass.), Maura Gonsalves (Dartmouth, Mass.) and Friedland—that were playing in their final home match.
UMass Dartmouth (8-8-1) controlled the pace of play in the opening 45 minutes of action. The Corsairs unleashed the first seven shots of the contest, while winning corner kick opportunities. The hosts were finally able to break through in the 27th minute, when sophomore Lucy Jensen (Boxborough, Mass.) slipped a through ball from the left flank. Friedland and freshman Lily Higgins (Hanson, Mass.) crossed up the charging Lancer defender, which provided Friedland an open path to the net. The senior striker capitalized on the opportunity, netting her fourth marker of the campaign.
UMass Dartmouth continued to tilt the pitch in its favor, entering the intermission with a 14-4 advantage in shots.
Worcester State (11-3-1) quickly forged a 1-all tie in the 47th minute, generating the scoring opportunity off a failed Corsair clear. Senior Sarina Lathrop (Hopedale, Mass.) was in the right place at the right time, when a deflected pass bounced onto her foot. She trapped the ball and spun to face the net, firing a shot inside the far, right post.
The Corsairs nearly won the match in the waning minutes of regulation, as Gonsalves broke down the left sideline, but was stonewalled by sophomore Vanessa O'Donnell (Worcester, Mass.).
With less than 25 seconds remaining in the second overtime session, senior Kaleigh Evans (Saugus, Mass.) pushed a game-winner attempt just wide of the cage.
Sophomore Nikki Butts (Milford, Mass.) made nine stops to remain unbeaten on the season with a 4-0-1 individual record. Junior Jillian Witkowski (Leicester, Mass.) played the opening 45 minutes in net, stopping four of the five attempts she faced. O'Donnell earned the draw after making three saves over the final 65 minutes of action.
UMass Dartmouth will close its regular-season at 5 p.m. on Nov. 1, when the Corsairs travel to Western Connecticut State University.
