Box Score DANBURY, Conn. – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth women's soccer team fell to Little East Conference foe Western Connecticut State University 4-0 in the final contest of the 2014 regular season on Saturday evening. The Colonials clinched their ninth LEC Regular-Season title and earned the top seed in the upcoming conference tournament.
Western Connecticut (14-5-1, 6-1 LEC) put three of their four strikes in the back of the net during the opening 45 minutes of play. Junior Emily Newhard scored the eventual game-winner in the ninth minute of the first. Three minutes later, sophomore Celia DeVoe setup Rebecca Rivera to give the hosts a two goal advantage. DeVoe found herself on the scoring end of the Colonial's third goal of the half, when she converted off a corner attempt in the 33rd minute.
In the second half, Autumn Sorice wrapped the scoring for the contest with her fourth mark of the season in the 73rd minute. The Corsairs, who were limited to only one shot in the opening stanza, generated five in the proceeding half, but were unable to find the back of the net. Western Connecticut held a 29-6 advantage in shots throughout the contest.
UMass Dartmouth (8-9-1, 3-4 LEC) split goalkeeper duties between freshman Madison Boucher (Southampton, Mass.) and sophomore Nikki Butts (Milford, Mass.). Boucher stopped six shots in the first half and Butts deflected away five attempts in the final half for the Corsairs. For the Colonials, freshman Jillian Fernandez recorded one save in 82 minutes of play before yielding her post to Jenna Santoriello for the final eight minutes of the game.
UMass Dartmouth has earned the fifth-seed for the upcoming LEC tournament and will travel to Keene State College on Tuesday, Nov. 4, to take on the fourth-seeded Owls in the Quarterfinal round of the tournament. The time of the contest will be announced on Sunday. As the top-seed, Western Connecticut will host the winner of Keene State and the Corsairs in the Semifinals on Thursday, November 6.
