Box Score WESTFIELD, Mass. - Junior forward Emily Anderson (Medway, Mass.) tipped in Chelsey Campbell's (Barre, Mass.) shot off of a corner play just 1:41 into overtime to give the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth field hockey team a 3-2 win over Westfield State University in Little East Conference action at Alumni Field on Saturday afternoon.
On the winning play, Campbell shot from the top of the arc and Anderson positioned herself at the left post to deflect the game-deciding strike into the backboard.
Westfield State rallied from a 2-0 halftime deficit behind a pair of second-half goals from Jenelle Juskiewicz to force the extra frame.
Juskiewicz first goal came in the 57th minute, batting in a through ball from teammate Holly Brouilette at the right post to cut the lead to 2-1.
Juskiewicz registered her second mark nine minutes later, as Rachel Bunce fired a shot from the left side that deflected off the pads of Corsairs' goalkeeper Elizabeth St. Germaine (Wareham, Mass.), and Juskiewicz dove to the right post to knock the rebound in for the equalizer.
UMass Dartmouth gained the lead with strong play in the opening 20 minutes. Junior Jill Levrault (Somerset, Mass.) netted the game's first goal, tipping in a left-side cross from freshman Katie Tighe (Easton, Mass.) in the 11th minute off of a corner play. Tighe inserted the ball to start the play, then received a pass near the end line and fired the ball across the goal mouth where Levrault was able to tip it past Westfield goalkeeper Megahn Fountaine.
In the 20th minute, Ali Ladue (Bridgewater, Mass.) scored off of a cross from Katelin Morrissey (Taunton, Mass.) to give the Corsairs a 2-1 lead.
Fountaine finished with nine saves in net for Westfield State after being peppered with shots early in the game, while St. Germaine came up with six saves for the Corsairs. St. Germaine earned her third victory in goal for the visiting team.
UMass Dartmouth had a 10-8 edge in shots on goal and a 10-3 advantage in penalty corners.
The Corsairs improve to 4-4- on the season, 2-0 in the Little East Conference, while Westfield drops to 2-2, 0-2 in conference play. UMass Dartmouth returns to the field on Tuesday, Sept. 23 when the Corsairs host Tufts in a 7:00 pm non-conference matchup at Cressy Field.
