Plymouth State Shuts Out Men's Soccer, 5-0

DARTMOUTH, Mass. - The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth men's soccer fell to Plymouth State on Saturday evening dropping a 5-0 decision at home on Cressy Field.

With the loss, UMD slips to 7-7-1 (2-3-1 LEC) on the year while Plymouth State improves to 8-5-1 (4-3-1 LEC).

Junior Stephan Teixeira (Brockton, Mass.) paced the Corsairs with four shots, two on net. Junior Matt Vidal (New Bedford, Mass.) and freshman John Correia (Peabody, Mass.) each footed two shots with one on goal apiece.

The first goal was struck in the 44th minute when Panther freshman Marc Herrington (London, England) found the back of the net for his first collegiate goal when he received the pass from senior Adam Edmunds (Wilton, N.H.) and sent the Panthers into the intermission up 1-0.

The scoring would pick up right where it left off in the second half, when freshman Viktor Nilsson (Stockholm, Sweden) gathered the pass from classmate Herrington ripping a shot that deflected off a Corsair and found the back of the net for his in the 63rd minute. Nilsson would strike two more times in the match, next when he received a cross from sophomore Nick Rutherford (Sydney, Australia), flicking it into the open net. His final goal in the waning moments of the contest was set up from a far shot from Rutherford, with Nilsson eventually looping in into the front left corner of the net.

Corsair junior keeper Andre Reis (Fall River, Mass.) collected one save, but fell to 3-6-0 on the season. Panther netminder Felix Lindberg (Stockholm, Sweden) earned the victory by turning aside all six shots on goal by the Corsairs and improving to 8-3-1 on the year.

UMass Dartmouth led Plymouth State in both corner kicks (13-4) and shots (14-11), but they could not capitalize on the chances that they produced.

The Corsairs will be back in action on Tuesday Oct. 27th at 7 pm when they host Suffolk University at Cressy Field, while Plymouth State will visit Colby-Sawyer on Wednesday, Oct. 28 at 3 p.m.
