Box Score 2 FORT MYERS, Fla. – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth softball dropped a pair of games in the final day of its' spring trip against the Manchester University, 12-4, and Wis.-Superior, 4-0, on Thursday at the Century Links Sports Complex.
Game #1 Manchester 12, UMass Dartmouth 4 (5 innings)
Sophomore Marissa Spinuzzi (Fair Lawn, N.J.) and junior Shannon Orton (Swansea, Mass.) each registered their third multi-hit games of the season, however Manchester unloaded ten runs in the third to power the Spartans past the Corsairs in five innings, 12-4.
Kaile Niezgodski, Ashley Stahl, Emily Willmann all recorded extra-base hits during the offensive outburst. Niezgodski registered a three-run triple to give Manchester a four run advantage. Up 6-0, Stahl knocked a double down the left field line to push home teammate Lauren Ladwig, while Willman matched Stahl with an RBI double of her own down the left field to give the Spartans a 10 run lead.
In the bottom half of the third, UMass Dartmouth put three runs on the scoreboard to cut into the deficit. Freshman Rebecca Field (Brentwood, N.H.) led off the inning with a double down the right field line. Classmate Emily Colton (Kingston, Mass.) directly followed with a single into right field, allowing Field to come across the plate. After Dylan Parsons (Methuen, Mass.) reached on a fielder's choice and Spinuzzi ripped a single to left center, Orton produced an RBI base knock for the teams' second score. With Parsons on third and Spinuzzi on second, Mary Pieroni (Arlington, Mass.) generated a sacrifice fly to make the score 10-3.
The following inning, Manchester added a pair of runs to increase its lead, 12-3. In the bottom of the fifth, sophomore Abby Tremblay (New Bedford, Mass.) laced an RBI single up the middle to bring the Corsairs with in eight.
Spartan Anna Schillinger scattered ten hits and struck out four to earn her first win of the season, while UMass Dartmouth shared time in the circle between Orton, Tremblay and freshman Hannah Smith (Attleboro, Mass.).
Game #2 Wis.-Superior 4 UMass Dartmouth 0
Sophomore Sarah Hendrickson hurled a complete game two-hitter to lead the Yellow Jackets past the Corsairs, 4-0.
Sophomore Adi Alicea-Cordero (Dorchester, Mass.) and Spinuzzi were the only UMass Dartmouth batters who cracked the scoring column against Hendrickson. In the sixth inning, Alicea-Cordero lined a single up the middle for her first collegiate hit of her career. Spinuzzi, who has a team-best 12 hits through eight games, recorded the first hit of the game for the Corsairs in the fourth.
After a scoreless first three innings, Sasha Fjeran broke the silence with an RBI single to right. In the next inning, a pair of fielding miscues and a double by Ciarra Taipale increased Wis.-Superior's advantage to four runs.
In the circle, Smith surrendered five hits for four runs and struck out a pair for UMass Dartmouth.
The Corsairs (3-5) return to action on Tuesday, Mar. 24 when they travel to Worcester State in double-header action beginning at 4 p.m.
