DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth softball team dropped a pair of Little East Conference games to Western Connecticut State University on Saturday afternoon, 8-0 (5 innings) and 17-0 (5 innings).

The Corsairs (6-15) fall to 2-7 in conference play, while the Colonials (16-10) improve to 7-1 in the LEC circuit.

Western Connecticut 8, UMass Dartmouth 0 (5 innings)

Starting pitcher Emily Cintorino (Bristol, Conn.) and lead-off batter Nina Wojtkiewicz (Griswold, Conn.) paved the way for the visitors in Game 1.

Cintorino fanned six as she hurled five innings of two-hit softball. After surrendering a pair of singles in the opening frame, the Griswold, Conn. native retired 12 consecutive batters to earn her seventh win of the year. Wojtkiewicz went 2-for-4 with two RBI, two runs, and two stolen bases to fuel Western Connecticut's offense.

In the first inning, junior Rachel Carey (Holbrook, Conn.) lined a single to centerfield\ and sophomore Abby Tremblay (New Bedford, Mass.) found some grass in right field to represent UMass Dartmouth's only hits of the contest. Cintorino had the Corsair's number over the next four innings; not allowing a baserunner, while striking out four.

An RBI ground out by Erin Weber (Rocky Hill, Conn.) and an RBI single by Julia Bocek put the first two runs on the scoreboard in third inning for the Colonials. In the ensuing inning, Wojtkiewicz and Jenna Gaudioso (East Haven, Conn.) produced run-scoring singles to increase Western Connecticut's lead to four runs.  The Colonials broke open the contest in the top of fifth, generating four runs on two hits to secure the five inning win.

Western Connecticut 17, UMass Dartmouth 0 (5 innings)

Western Connecticut registered a season-high 17 runs on 19 hits to seize the back-half of the double-header in five innings.

Kristen Sliman (Brewster, N.Y.) led the charge with a perfect 4-for-4 performance at the plate, including three RBI and run scored. Wojtkiewicz complimented Sliman with three hits and four runs in the lead-off role. In the circle, junior Alle Sabith (Meriden, Conn.) struck out nine in five hit-less innings.

The Colonials pushed at least one run across home plate in every inning, highlighted by an eight-run fifth. Kayla Nowak (Northford, Conn.) knocked home the first runs in the fifth inning when she produced a two RBI double to left field. The next six runs came on four RBI singles and a pair of fielder's choices to clinch the sweep for Western Connecticut.

UMass Dartmouth returns to action at noon on Monday, April 20, when the Corsairs host conference foe Plymouth State. The Colonials continue LEC play tomorrow with a pair of games at UMass Boston, with the first pitch scheduled for noon.
