Box Score PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth softball team utilized a pair of two-run home runs to secure a 4-2 win in Game 1 of the Little East Conference double-header at the Dayna A. Bazar Stadium on Wednesday. In the night cap, the Anchorwomen jumped out to an 11-7 lead before a rain delay postponed the contest in the top of the sixth inning. The rescheduled day and time is TBD.
UMass Dartmouth 4, Rhode Island College 2
Sophomores Adi Alicea-Cordero (Dorchester, Mass.) and Marissa Spinuzzi (Fair Lawn, N.J.) each produced two-run homeruns to lead UMass Dartmouth past Rhode Island College, 4-2.
Tied at two-all in the top of the seventh, freshman Rebecca Field (Brentwood, N.H.) led off the inning with a based-on-ball. Alicea-Cordero followed with a hard hit ball between third and short that managed to bounce past the left fielder. The Dorchester, Mass. native, raced around the base paths and crossed home plate before the incoming throw arrived at home to give the Corsairs a 4-2 lead they would not relinquish.
In the third, freshman Emily Colton (Kingston, Mass.) tallied the first mark in the hit column for either team when she lined a single to centerfield. Colton swiped second to put herself in scoring position with one out. Spinuzzi stepped to the plate and lined her first collegiate home run over the left field fence, giving the Corsairs a 2-0 lead. The sophomore second baseman also contributed her sixth double of the season in the fifth.
The Anchorwomen knotted the game at two in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run triple to right field by center fielder Abigail Francis. For the game, Francis went 2-for-3 and Sarah Molin contributed a pair of hits.
In the circle, freshman Hannah Smith (Attleboro, Mass.) fanned six as she secured her second win of the season. The right-handed starter scattered seven hits and allowed two runs in the complete game win. For Rhode Island College, Katelyn McCaughey surrendered four runs on four hits, while striking out seven batters in seven innings of work.
Rhode Island College 11, UMass Dartmouth 7 (Top of 6th-PPD)
The bats came alive in Game 2, as the Anchorwomen built up a seven run lead after two innings. In the opening inning, Rhode Island College produced four hits and took advantage of two fielding lapses to take a 4-0 advantage. The Anchorwomen tacked on three more runs in the following inning, highlighted by an RBI single by Lauren DiScuillo and a run-scoring double by Justina Thomas.
Trailing by seven runs in the top of the third, UMass Dartmouth slashed the deficit to one with a six-run top half. The Corsairs strung together seven consecutive hits to start the inning, including a pair of extra base knocks from Field and Cordero. Rhode Island College plated three runs in the bottom half of the inning, in large part to a two-run double by Katleyn Sykora, to make the score 10-6. Both teams added a run in the fifth, before the game was called due to excessive rain.
