Ice Hockey Falls at Salem State, 7-2

SALEM, Mass. - Sophomore Casey Shea (Woburn, Mass.) netted his tenth goal of the season as UMass Dartmouth fell to Salem State, 7-2, on the road at Rockett Arena in league play on Saturday afternoon. 

Shea converted the Corsair's second power play goal of the game with six minutes remaining in the second period. Mike Sones (Watertown, Ontario) and Mike Kelly (Stoneham, Mass.) assisted on the scoring play. Junior Matt Baldino (Woburn, Mass.) put UMass Dartmouth on the scoreboard and tied the contest at one goal apiece with a man-up goal at the 11:26 mark in the opening stanza off assists from Jon Houk (Richboro, Pa.) and Connor Court Swansea, Ill.). The Corsairs went 2-6 in power play chances.  

The Vikings jumped out to a 4-1 advantage after the opening period behind a pair of goals from Cam Moniz (Seekonk, Mass.). The senior converted a tip-in 9:16 into the opening period for the first score of the game. After Baldino notched the game at 1-1, Moniz struck again for his team-leading 11th goal at 13:49. Salem State closed out the opening period with goals from Andrew Bettencourt (Riverside, R.I.) and Andrew Bucci (Peabody, Mass.).  

In the second, Bucci beat the net minder for the second time and put the Vikings up 5-1 with a power-play strike at the 9:41 mark. Roughly four minutes later, Shea brought the Corsairs within three (5-2). Daniel Campbell (Waterloo, Ontario) answered Shea's goal to give the visitors a 6-2 lead after two. Brandon Platt (Pittsburgh, Pa.) wrapped the scoring with a third period strike.  

Marcus Zelzer (Green Bay, Wis.) stopped 22 shots en route to his ninth win of the year for Salem State. Drew Michals (Newton, Mass.) played nearly 45 minutes between the pipes for UMass Dartmouth and stopped a game-high 31 shots. Jacob Ferreira (Westport, Mass.) and Tommy Bay (Duluth, Ga.) combined for five saves in relief. 

The Corsairs return to Hetland Arena on Thursday, Jan. 28 at 7:30 p.m. against Fitchburg State.
