Men's Soccer and Rhode Island College Battle to 3-3 Draw

Box Score

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – UMass Dartmouth and Rhode Island College played as evenly as their records would indicate on Saturday, drawing at 3-3 in a crucial Little East Conference matchup as both squads combined for 38 shots and 22 saves.

The Basics

Score: UMass Dartmouth 3, Rhode Island College 3 (2OT)
Records:
UMass Dartmouth (6-3-1, 1-1-1 LEC) | Rhode Island College (6-3-1, 1-1-1 LEC)

How it Happened

UMass Dartmouth connected all dots out of the gates. Fourteen minutes in, the Corsairs scored on their first corner opportunity, when senior Stephan Teixeira (Brockton, Mass.) tipped the Haden Cordeiro (Dartmouth, Mass.) ball past RIC keeper Chris Moura (Rumford, R.I.). Austin Dias (Smithfield, R.I.) made the score 2-0 in the 27th minute, converting on a quick look from John Correia (Peabody, Mass.).

The lead wouldn't last as the Anchormen then made quick work, with Jack Clancey (Narragansett, R.I.) and Dan Monteiro (Pawtucket, R.I.) both scoring within four minutes before half to even the score at two.

Teixeira found the back of the net again early in the second half, this time on the assist from senior Matt Vidal (New Bedford, Mass.) in the 52nd minute, but RIC again had an answer when Komla Dogbey (Providence, R.I.) struck to make the score 3-3 in the 75th minute. The Anchormen then applied relentless pressure for the remainder of regulation, and had a free-kick opportunity from 30 yards out with just 14 seconds left, but the ball trickled out of bounds.

The opportunities didn't lessen in the first overtime period, but quality goalkeeping on both ends keep the score even. UMass Dartmouth's Luis Carranza (New Bedford, Mass.) made a diving save before Moura was peppered relentlessly in the final 30 seconds, registering four stops as the clock ticked down. In the second period, neither team could find a quality chance as both defenses rose to the occasion.

Inside the Numbers

  • Teixeira notched the third multi-goal performance of his UMass Dartmouth career and first of the 2016 season on Saturday.

  •  A total of six players on each side registered at least one shot on goal during the contest.
  • Carranza's 10 saves on the game marked a new single-game career high for the senior.
