Plymouth State Rallies for 4-3 Win over Men's Soccer in Season Finale

PLYMOUTH, N.H. –Five points from senior captain Matt Vidal (New Bedford, Mass.) were not enough on Saturday afternoon, as Plymouth State scored three straight goals and captured the 4-3 win to close out the regular season in Little East Conference action.

How it Happened

Plymouth State got on the board early, striking with in the first four minutes of the match. Sophomore Dan Shaw (Winchester, England) was able to capitalize on the Nick Rutherford (Sydney, Australia) pass to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead. 

UMass Dartmouth answered back in a hurry, when Vidal found junior Austin Dias (Smithfield, R.I.) for his ninth goal of the season to tie the game up for the Corsairs. Thirteen minutes later Vidal registered a of his own, giving UMass Dartmouth its first lead.

Rutherford was able to increase his point total on the game to three with a goal at 23:21 to tie the game back up. Plymouth State would add on two more goals on the afternoon to extend their lead into the second half of play. 

With time winding down, Vidal scored his team leading 16th goal of the season to cut into Plymouth State's lead, but the Panthers were able to hold off the Corsairs for the final 10 minutes.

Inside the Numbers

  • The Corsairs split time in net between senior Luis Carranza (New Bedford, Mass.) and freshman Danny Andrade (New Bedford, Mass.), with both goalies combining for eight saves on the afternoon.
  • Senior Felix Lindeberg (Stockholm, Sweden) took the win after making 10 saves on the day.
  • Plymouth State held the advantage on shots, outshooting the Corsairs 19-16, while both teams split the 16 corners on the afternoon.

Up Next

The Corsairs finish their season on the outside looking in on the LEC conference tournament. After dropping the final game of the regular season, the Corsairs wrap up the year with an 11-6-1 overall record and 3-3-1 slate in league play.
