How it Happened
UMass Dartmouth 0, Pomona-Pitzer 8 (6 innings)
Pomona-Pitzer' junior righty Liz Rodarte (Ontario, Calif.) stymied the bats of the Corsairs in the opening contest, tossing a six-inning complete game one-hitter while striking out 12 total. The Sagehens used a 10-hit display at the dish to ride toward the 8-0 victory.
In the top of the third, the Corsairs broke the streak of seven consecutive outs made as Kaitlyn Hart (Norton, Mass.) worked a one-out walk before Nicole McSweeney (Bridgewater, Mass.) legged out an infield single to get the first knock on the board.
With a 3-0 lead already established, Pomona-Pitzer tacked on two more in the bottom half of the fourth inning as Kristen Hong's (Westminster, Mass.) single to left field plated the first, before the junior came around to score from first base on double down the left field line from Olivia Campion (Lakewood, Calif.). The Sagehens punctuated the hot-hitting during the next inning when freshman Makensey Druckman (Santa Monica, Calif.) sent a missile over the center field fence for a two-run homer.
UMass Dartmouth 9, Washington & Jefferson 3
UMass Dartmouth used a pair of four-run innings and had six batters pound out multiple hits while Victoria Woodward (Middleboro, Mass.) tossed six complete innings of work, allowing three runs off of seven hits.
The Presidents loaded the bases in the top of the first inning, but the Corsairs nullified the threat when Emily Colton (Kingston, Mass.) snagged a liner out of the air that was destined for the outfield grass. The Corsairs struck for their first runs of the day in the bottom of the first, starting when Leah Major (Fairhaven, Mass.) cashed in with a runner on third, scorching a liner low to the dirt and out of reach of the second baseman. Later, Cierra Sheerin (Bridgewater, Mass.) plated a pair when she laced a single through the middle to score Major and Colton. Sheerin scored the fourth run in the frame when Lexi Pereira (Middleboro, Mass.) lifted a sacrifice fly into center field.
The scoring spilled into the bottom of the second frame for the Corsairs. Colton got aboard from a fielding miscue by the Presidents shortstop and one pitch later, Kylie Fletcher (Dighton, Mass.) ripped her first collegiate triple over the head of the right fielder to give the host an early 5-0 margin.
Washington & Jefferson scrapped across its first of the contest in the visitors half of the third, starting when Dana Parker (Coraopolis, Pa.) reached on a one-out single, before stealing second base and moving over to third with heads-up base running. With two down, Addy Helffrich (Sewickley, Pa.) rocketed a double to break the shutout. In the top of the fifth, the Presidents added two more run to pull within two on the scoreboard.
But UMass Dartmouth's offense was feeling it in the final game of the break, using a quartet of knocks, including RBI singles from Pereira, Kerry Farrell (New City, N.Y.) and Mackenzie Joyce (Marblehead, Mass.), to close the trip on a high-note with the 9-3 final.
