Softball Splits Pair With Washington & Jefferson, Webster At PFX Spring Games

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CLERMONT, Fla. --  Freshman Kelly Bist (Howell, Mich.) tossed a complete game five-hitter and struck out five to lead UMass Dartmouth to a 6-1 non-league college softball victory over Washington & Jefferson Wednesday afternoon at the PFX Spring Games.  The Corsairs opened the day with a 9-4 non-league setback to Webster at Legends Way Field.

Freshman Victoria Rossetti (Valley Stream, N.Y.) staked UMass Dartmouth (5-5) to a 1-0 lead in its first at-bat with an RBI single in the nightcap, and sophomore Steph Nosky's (Norton, Mass.) two-run double in the second extended that margin to 3-0.  The Presidents got a run back in the bottom of the frame, but a third inning fielding error restored the Corsairs' three-run advantage.  Freshmen Skyla Berube (Dartmouth, Mass.) and Jaime Brown (Taunton, Mass.) iced UMass Dartmouth's triumph with a fifth inning RBI single and a run-scoring double in the sixth, and Bist took care of the rest inside the circle by throwing 71 of 109 pitches for strikes to earn the win.  Junior Kylie Fletcher (Dighton, Mass.) and freshman Lynsie Miracle (Richland, Wash.) each rapped out two hits in the second game victory for the Corsairs, who collected nine hits in the contest.

Webster (6-7) jumped out to a 5-0 lead in its first at-bat in the opener on a trio of singles that were followed by a wild pitch and error, and UMass Dartmouth got a run back in the bottom of the frame on sophomore Lindsay Chubbuck's (Berkley, Mass.) RBI single.  After the Gorloks regained a five-run advantage in the top of the second, an error and Fletcher's run-scoring single in the bottom of the inning closed the Corsair deficit to four, but Webster added two more RBI singles that sandwiched senior Cierra Sheerin's (Bridgewater, Mass.) run-scoring hit and accounted for the final score.

Chubbuck amassed two of UMass Dartmouth's six hits in the opening game, as junior Jill Richards (Kingston, Mass.) allowed four hits in suffering the setback inside the circle for the Corsairs, who close out play at the PFX Spring Games on Thursday by taking on Gordon at 11:15 am and Dubuque at 1:30 pm at Legends Way Field.
