Seniors Lead the Way on Their Day; Defeat USM, 2-1, in Double OT

The Corsairs honored their seven seniors

DARTMOUTH, Mass. – It was a Senior Day to remember as the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth field hockey team pulled out a, 2-1, double overtime victory on 5th-year senior Brittany Perry's game-winning goal Saturday afternoon at Cressy Field.

The Corsairs improve to 5-9 and 4-4 in the LEC, while the Huskies fall to 9-7 and 6-3 in the conference.

The Corsairs honored Mikella DaSilva, Kylie Dias, Sam Fisher, Desarai Melendez, Brittany Perry, Hannah Steen and Lydia Stormwind.

Dias played a hand in each of the Corsairs' two goals, as she scored in the 59th minute with a chip off of a Steen drive from the top of the circle before assisting on the Perry game winner in double overtime.

The UMass Dartmouth offense started off hot with three consecutive penalty corner opportunities that preceded a mini-breakaway attempt for Dias in the opening five minutes of play.

After a scoreless first half that saw the Corsairs outshoot the Huskies, 6-5, the University of Southern Maine put themselves on the board in the third period as sophomore Mary Keef connected with freshman Adelle Surette for a penalty corner goal at 39:24.

The final period in regulation was a quiet, back-and-forth affair without any shots for either team, but the Corsair offense pressed on in the final minutes to produce two penalty corners that would eventually result in the Dias equalizer from Steen with less than 90 seconds to play.

Following a scoreless first overtime session, freshman goalkeeper Alyssa McDonough kept hope alive for UMass Dartmouth as she dove to deflect a cross on a two-versus-none Southern Maine breakaway with 5:20 left on the clock.

Less than a minute later, Perry scored from Dias to put the game away and lift the Corsairs to their fifth win of the season.

McDonough finished the afternoon with four saves, while Julianna Kiklis saved seven.

The Corsairs return to Cressy Field on Monday when they host the Warriors of Eastern Connecticut State University at 4:30 p.m.
